The New York Yankees today acquired infielder/outfielder Eric Hinske from the Pittsburgh Pirates along with cash considerations in exchange for minor leaguer right-handed pitcher Casey Erickson and minor league outfielder Eric Fryer.

Sounds good.

Good trade. Hinske will help, especially against right handers.

I would've liked to see Shelley given another shot in the majors since this roster spot would've went to Nady had the elbow healed. But Hinske's capable off the bench and it helps that he can play 3rd. Plus neither guy they gave up was worth much. Good deal.

World Series here we come...

Good move, nothing earth shattering though. I would have rather kept Pena on the roster and let Hinske play the corner spots instead of Ransom. -Jitpal

I would've kept Pena up too, but he could probably use the regular at-bats. Either way, the Yankees win with him.

As for Hinske, he'll at least give us a little more pop when Alex has to sit, and a nice pinch-hitter to use from time to time.

Can you guys give me a recap of the type of prospects the Pirates got. Do they have the potential to make an impact in the major leagues?

Neither one of them are really considered prospects, they are both 23 year olds in A ball (Erickson in low A and Fryer in high A). Fryer isn't producing, he had a solid season last year in low A for Milwaukee and the Yankees picked him up for Chase Wright, who they traded just to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. For whatever reason, he just hasn't been good this year and the chances of him becoming a serviceable big leaguer are slim IMO. You have more of a chance with Erickson who may be able to sneak into the majors as a middle reliever, but he isn't there yet. Right now he is just a 23 year old reliever in low A ball.

Thanks. SO pretty much to summarize this deal, Huntington is an idiot. Way to make a dumb business move.

I think it was basically a move to save some money. He probably already tried Geico. :D
