Give AJ Burnett some credit. Pivotal 5th inning. With Burnett having problems with location he had to stop the bleeding @ 3 runs. Not only did he get out of the inning with 2 men on unscathed but also pushed through the 6th. A true test of grit.

Let's face it, the Yanks are in a rotation crisis. Every time CC Sabbathia and AJ Burnett start, the Yankees are pressed to win. Pettitte is in a tailspin reminiscent to last season's second half collapse. You don't know what you're going to get out of Joba. You don't know what you're going to get out of the sub in Wang's spot.

Mark Teixiera is paying dividends early and often in NYC. While CC and AJ's returns have been alright, Mark has been such a catalyst. If Mark doesn't hit that game winning homer and walks instead, A-Rod bounces into what could have been a double play. Zumaya is one out from getting out of a jam.

I think Philip Hughes is fine in the pen. It's going to boost his confidence but its not going to obscure his problems. He still has to learn another pitch before I say he can be a starter. A fast ball, cutter, and a curve aren't enough to go deep especially since as a starter he dips to 91-92mph after 4-5 innings. Maybe in another 2 seasons he'll be ready but right now, Carl Pavano has more wins than Joba and Hughes combined.

Pavano has more wins because Joba has been incredibly inconsistent and Hughes has been in the bullpen the majority of the year.

Have we forgotten that Hughes wasn't very good in his last 3 starts, leading to his reduced role in the pen?

Not saying he won't be great some day but let's not fall in love with these bullpen appearances.

However, it IS refreshing to see a guy not go crazy on the mound after striking a guy out.

Damn with Joba and Phil, the Yankees either have an average back rotation or an amazing bullpen.

1.) CC
2.) Burnett
3.) Pettitte
4.) Joba
5.) Phil

LR Aceves
MR Joba
SU Phil
CL Mo

Even Wang has some above average appearances in relief.

Today we got a good taste of what it would be like without either Joba or Hughes in the pen. In a tight game, Aceve gave up a homer in the 8th cutting it down to 2-1 Yanks. Luckily Mo nailed it down. However,
it's VERY apparent that the Yanks are not done spending or rebuilding.

I still like Aceves a lot despite the home run.

Tomorrow, the Jobba takes the mound vs. what could arguably be Detroit's best pitcher Edwin Jackson. You can bet the Tampa Bay Rays are kicking themselves by letting him go and keeping "Big Game" James Shields.

It's also Old Timer's day with the debut of Mike Mussina...and I've got Tickets! Feel free to envy me. :)

Well, it's not going to be easy. None of these games have been...Joba is going to have to show the Yanks something because Cashman pretty much Guaranteed that the Yanks won't go after Halladay and enjoy the riches that their youth have (wow, this guy thinks he's Theo Epstein).

Joba just looks awful out there in the first inning. Leaving his pitches up, not hitting his spots, walked the 2nd batter of the game.
