Orioles @ Yankees

Post#1 » by nykgeneralmanager » Mon Jul 20, 2009 4:35 pm

Lets push ourselves into 1st this week

Tonight: RHP David Hernandez (2-2, 3.94) vs. LHP Andy Pettitte (8-5, 4.85), 7:05

Tuesday: LHP Rich Hill (3-2, 6.92) vs. RHP Sergio Mitre (season debut), 7:05

Wednesday: RHP Jason Berken (1-7, 6.44) vs. RHP A.J. Burnett (8-4, 3.81), 1:05

Phil Hughes since June 10th:
16.2 innings, 9 hits, 0 runs, 3 BB, 21 K - 0.00 ERA and 0.72 WHIP
Overall as a reliever:
21.1 innings, 11 hits, 2 runs, 5 BB, 27 K - 0.84 ERA and 0.75 WHIP

Alex Rodriguez:
Sure his BA isn't quite there, but he has an OBP of .402 and SLG of .557 and .959 OPS. He doesn't have the at bats to qualify just yet, but he would rank 5th in the AL in OPS right now, even ahead of our savior Mark Teixeira. In 61 games he has 19 homers and 52 RBI, which would equal 50 homers and 135 RBI over a 162 game season. Not too bad for a guy who had hip surgery, came back early, sucked for 2-3 more weeks after he got back, did not sit out one day for an entire month. Also he hasn't missed a beat in the field.

Mark Teixeira:
After not homering since that Mets series back in early June, he hit two bombs this weekend. Nearly half (47 of 96) of his hits have been for extra bases this season. Nice to see him and ARod hitting at the same time right now, hopefully it continues especially with the starting pitching and the bullpen being so dominant right now.

Robinson Cano:
A few weeks ago we all agreed that he can't hit 5th because he doesn't have what it takes to protect a guy like A-Rod, but if he was dropped to 6th or 7th he would look like a superstar again. Now in July he is hitting .350. Could just be his 2nd half hotness, but Cano can really really take off as we all know and be unstoppable for an extended period of time. He has 36 multi hit games in 90 games this season. He is likely to set career highs in HR, 2B, SB, and a career low in K. I'd also say he is having his best defensive season with fewer mistakes than ever.

Derek Jeter:
Nobody talks about him anymore because hey, he is still Derek Jeter. He is still hitting over .320, his OBP is still around .400. Boring. You can talk about the new stadium being HR friendly, but he is likely to end up with his highest total since 2004 and 2005, he could also finish with the 3rd or 4th highest SB total in his career. In terms of BB/K ratio, he is having his best season in his entire career. He hasn't been as much of a liability in the field either. Very nice bounce back season for him so far.

Mariano Rivera:
It's almost funny, all the talk in the first two months about him showing a clear decline and aging and people getting worried because he lost a few games that weren't even save situations. Now we are nearing August, and in 40 inning he has walked just 4 batters and struck out 44, while only allowing 31 hits. His WHIP is 0.88, the only better seasons than that in his ridiculous career were last year (a freaky 0.67) and in 2005 (when it was barely better at 0.87). He has only 1 blown save as well.
Since June 6th, he has thrown 16.2 innings, allowed 5 hits, 1 run, 2 BB, and 16 K. That is a 0.42 WHIP and 0.54 WHIP.

Sigh... I still say that starting spot is rightfully Phil's and he could've been stretched out for it if people weren't so damned obsessed with the bullpen. At least Rich Hill has looked awful thus far and should be lit up that night.

Glad to see Andy throw such a good game. The Yanks only had to throw Coke 6 pitches and Aceves 11 pitches out of the bullpen.

nice walk off win...

Big defensive plays by Tex, molina and coke..

Godzilla with the walk off homer..

Say what you want, balls fly out of right field but that shot leaves any MLB ball park!!

Did you see A-rod, Posada and melky? they were signaling Matsui to throw his helmet and like a bunch of little kids, they were all trying to catch it.. LOL.. love the comradarie.....

LOL.. watching sox/ rangers game... smoltz carried a 2-1 lead into the 6th and so far the ranger scored 5 runs, hitting 3 HR bombs in the inning...... I wish smoltz would have stayed here in Atlanta as the closer..... He just doesn't have the stuff anymore as a starter. Not close to the great starting pitcher he once was.... but he insisted on being a starter... go figure..

Both homers would've been out in any ballpark. Hinske's hit the face of the second deck and Matsui's went to the damn bleachers. I could forgive Andy's solo giveaway. It was a good pitch. It was a very low changeup, but it was just a better swing from Markakis.

A-Rod stole the helmet from Melky soon after.

One of the best games I've seen in a looooong time. It's nice to see the Yankees win with great pitching and stellar defense. Tex, Molina, Cano, Melky, etc. were stellar defensively. Pettitte was awesome. Timely hitting by 'Deki. YAAAAAANKEES WIN!

Matsui, so important in that line up with Cano failing to drive runs in, A-Rod working through that hip injury, and Posada taking a day off. What can be said about Hinskie? Better and cheaper than Swisher?

Wow, even just defensively, how great has the Texeira been? There's probably some statistic that tells me he sucks in that aspect, but screw you guys.

And Mo with a 10 pitch save...

This is the O's so let's not get crazy. The Yanks didn't even face Gutherie so they should be creaming this team. The true barometer reading will be how the Yanks fare against the Rays in Tampa.

True, but the Yanks did just sweep the first place Tigers and outpitched their two best pitchers, both of whom are probably top 5 pitchers in the AL this year.

We've also just faced them with the troubled back end of the rotation. Pettitte was on a slump and Mitre as 5th starter didn't blow it for us. We're also winning on great defense. It's always better to win against the Os then watch the Yanks lose. Red Sox losing is just an icing on the cake.

Burnett tonight...hopefully he could give us at least 6 good innings.
