Lets push ourselves into 1st this week
Tonight: RHP David Hernandez (2-2, 3.94) vs. LHP Andy Pettitte (8-5, 4.85), 7:05
Tuesday: LHP Rich Hill (3-2, 6.92) vs. RHP Sergio Mitre (season debut), 7:05
Wednesday: RHP Jason Berken (1-7, 6.44) vs. RHP A.J. Burnett (8-4, 3.81), 1:05
Phil Hughes since June 10th:
16.2 innings, 9 hits, 0 runs, 3 BB, 21 K - 0.00 ERA and 0.72 WHIP
Overall as a reliever:
21.1 innings, 11 hits, 2 runs, 5 BB, 27 K - 0.84 ERA and 0.75 WHIP
Alex Rodriguez:
Sure his BA isn't quite there, but he has an OBP of .402 and SLG of .557 and .959 OPS. He doesn't have the at bats to qualify just yet, but he would rank 5th in the AL in OPS right now, even ahead of our savior Mark Teixeira. In 61 games he has 19 homers and 52 RBI, which would equal 50 homers and 135 RBI over a 162 game season. Not too bad for a guy who had hip surgery, came back early, sucked for 2-3 more weeks after he got back, did not sit out one day for an entire month. Also he hasn't missed a beat in the field.
Mark Teixeira:
After not homering since that Mets series back in early June, he hit two bombs this weekend. Nearly half (47 of 96) of his hits have been for extra bases this season. Nice to see him and ARod hitting at the same time right now, hopefully it continues especially with the starting pitching and the bullpen being so dominant right now.
Robinson Cano:
A few weeks ago we all agreed that he can't hit 5th because he doesn't have what it takes to protect a guy like A-Rod, but if he was dropped to 6th or 7th he would look like a superstar again. Now in July he is hitting .350. Could just be his 2nd half hotness, but Cano can really really take off as we all know and be unstoppable for an extended period of time. He has 36 multi hit games in 90 games this season. He is likely to set career highs in HR, 2B, SB, and a career low in K. I'd also say he is having his best defensive season with fewer mistakes than ever.
Derek Jeter:
Nobody talks about him anymore because hey, he is still Derek Jeter. He is still hitting over .320, his OBP is still around .400. Boring. You can talk about the new stadium being HR friendly, but he is likely to end up with his highest total since 2004 and 2005, he could also finish with the 3rd or 4th highest SB total in his career. In terms of BB/K ratio, he is having his best season in his entire career. He hasn't been as much of a liability in the field either. Very nice bounce back season for him so far.
Mariano Rivera:
It's almost funny, all the talk in the first two months about him showing a clear decline and aging and people getting worried because he lost a few games that weren't even save situations. Now we are nearing August, and in 40 inning he has walked just 4 batters and struck out 44, while only allowing 31 hits. His WHIP is 0.88, the only better seasons than that in his ridiculous career were last year (a freaky 0.67) and in 2005 (when it was barely better at 0.87). He has only 1 blown save as well.
Since June 6th, he has thrown 16.2 innings, allowed 5 hits, 1 run, 2 BB, and 16 K. That is a 0.42 WHIP and 0.54 WHIP.
