Good deal. He will start some at CF, and be a utility infielder for the Yanks.

A good deal, although the Yankees really need to acquire a starting pitcher or a reliever.

The only thing I'm worried about is Joba's innings limit. I'd be happy with a CC-Burnett-Joba rotation in the playoff, but throwing Pettite or *gasp* Mitre out there would be a disaster

Doesn't really make a difference. Sox got Victor Martinez. What a move.

Hopefully we don't meet the Sox in the playoffs.

So basically they got a upgrade over Cody Ransom and Ramiro Pena (which is kinda like upgrading from a schwinn to a moped)? At least they didn't give up much of anything for him.

PS: There was a rumor (that made it through various wires) that had the Yankees trading Austin Jackson for Jerry Hairston Jr...caused a minor panic among Yankee fans.

Utility infielder yes. Start at CF? Pass. If we were talking about his brother Scott then yes, starting CF would be fine. Hairston's a mediocrish player. Better than Ransom and Pena (at least offensively) but not really anyone that's going to get anybody excited about. It's kinda like that Indian utility infielder that the Yanks traded for years back (can't remember the name but chubby, triple chins?).

Yanks trades chase weems no big deal. they have atleast 3 catcher prospects thats are good that I know of. Anything is better than Ransom, even Pena is by far.

Victor Martinez is vastly overrated. Putting him in the lineup hurts them in one way or another. He can play 1st and Catch. Either place they put him, they hurt the defense, significantly. Their defense this year is bad to begin with. If you play him at 1st, move Youkalis to 3rd, the defense at 1st and 3rd is worse and there isn't a huge increase in offensive production, if any, between Lowell and Martinez. He only helps the offense significantly when he plays in place of Varitek, in which case, the defense and game calling is worse. Not to mention that the Red Sox laud Varitek as the heart and soul of the team, which they effectively bench with V-Mart on the field. The deal will help them, especially if he can fill in for Kottaras or whoever they have catching Wakefield these days and on the days that Lowell has to sit. Not a big deal in my opinion.

Hairston on the other hand replaces Cody Ransom. Hairston has more speed and can play more positions. So it's an upgrade, again minimal. On the nice side, he's been pretty hot after the all-star break so far this year.

The other interesting thing is V-Mart's BA and OPS has been in decline every single month from his hot start. Does Fenway revive his well below pedestrian OPS? We will see. -Jitpal

i like this trade, because it gives us a guy that can play anywhere and replace Gardner in the short run. Also maybe now we can finally see Ransom being waived, i dont recall ever seeing someone with less skill than him.

Oh and i did want to see us get Washburn but for what Detroit gave for him no thanks. We can always get a Garland or some other pitcher through waiver wires so dont panic on the mitre at the 5th rotation spot and joba's innings.

Enrique was a pretty decent pickup, especially because he always owned Pedro.

Wasn't he the Herb Williams of the Yankees, stayed being traded only to end up back in pinstripes at the end of the day......
