The Yankees are one of many teams that have interest in free-agent pitcher Brad Penny, who was released by the Red Sox yesterday, but it's possible the righthander will not make it through waivers.

If Penny goes unclaimed by Monday, he will be free to sign with any team, but the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that the Twins are considering claiming Penny off waivers. Among the other contending clubs said to be sniffing around Penny are the Rockies, Giants, Marlins, White Sox, Rays and Rangers.

Penny, 31, was 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA with Boston. It is believed he would prefer to sign with an NL club. The Yankees are seeking to upgrade the No. 5 spot in their rotation. It is currently held by Sergio Mitre, who will face the White Sox tomorrow.

The Yankees claimed Penny earlier this month but the Red Sox pulled him back, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney.

Hell probably be better then Mitre was, who knows. However im not exactly sure i want to turn my tv on and see him with the NY on his chest, specially after all the **** i talked about how horrific he was to my redsox friends...

In all seriousness, Penny seems destined for teh NL. I dont see why the yanks dont take a chance on Mulder.

Mulder has nothing left and somone would have to be dropped from the 40 man roster.
