Damaso Marte has been great

Post#1 » by Scalabrine » Wed Sep 9, 2009 7:14 pm

I havent heard much discussion on how big of a addition he has been to our already solid pen.

Before he was on the DL, at the start of the season, he allowed 9 runs in 5.1 innings (one of his outings he allowed 6 runs in 1 inning), with 3 HR, and 3 Walks.

Since hes been back hes pitched 4.2 innings, K'd 5, walked 1, and he allowed 0 hits and 0 runs, hes a very valuable left handed arm too.

If he can maintain this into the post season our bullpen will be lightout.

You figure our rotation will be:
Sabathia - L
AJ - R
Andy - L
Joba - R
we will probably either pitch Aceves the first game and then rest him until the Joba game, or just keep Gaudin/Mitre ready for that game.
Then our pen will be:
6th-7th - Coke, Bruney, Marte, Aceves, Robertson (whos allowed 3 runs in his last 14 and K'd 61 in 41 total)
8th - Hughes (instead of using Hughes back to back we can patch up with the 6 and 7th guys)
9th - Rivera

Our depth for extra innings or short outings from one of our starters will be:
Gaudin
Mitre
Ramirez
Albaladejo

we are really hitting stride at the right time, Coke has struggled lately, but he looks like hes coming out of it in the past few games.

ill also add that we have the best record right now, and if it finishes that way, we will only need 3 starters for the opening 5 game series, meaning we could put Joba in the pen for an inning if we needed it.

Yikes, Joba-Hughes-Mo at the back end of the pen. They can literally pitch 5 innings. Four inning game anybody? :)

yeah but then we dont have Phil and Joba the next game. Having Joba and Hughes as setup men in back to back games would shorten the game 2 innings, depending on the breaks we get and how many days off, having Joba-Hughes-Mo would shorten the game immensly it would make it a 6 inning game for CC, Andy, AJ.

Marte is back to Pirates form, albeit for a short while now. Hopefully he stays like this, he can be DEADLY in the pen. Joba-Hughes-Mo would be devastating but he has to be a starter in the 7 game series'.
