Chavez just hopes he can overcome his current medical obstacles so the agenda can once again turn back to baseball.
He never has undergone a surgical procedure, but he could be facing two in the next month or so. He's scheduled to have a torn labrum repaired in his right shoulder Wednesday in Southern California, where the A's began a nine-game road trip with a 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.
Recovery from shoulder surgery could take from two to four months, while rehabbing from back surgery could be six to eight weeks. Chavez hopes whatever path he chooses will have him healthy by January and that he can escape the cloud of injuries that has plagued him the past two seasons.
"If I can look back and I've played 15 years, and two of them I was hurt, I'll take that," he said.
