The Oakland A's took their first formal step Thursday toward moving the baseball team 22 miles south, submitting plans for a sprawling, $1.8 billion "ballpark village" that, if approved, would be the largest development project in Fremont's history.
"It's a great step for us," said team co-owner Keith Wolff, the son of A's managing partner Lew Wolff. "I think we're creating something people all over the whole country will want to come look at. It will be really unique."
The A's want to build a $500 million, 32,000-seat ballpark surrounded by high-end retail shops, restaurants and housing near Auto Mall Parkway on the west side of Interstate 880 in southern Fremont. The 226-acre project, dubbed Cisco Field and Ballpark Village, would be privately financed, Keith Wolff said.
