Some interesting stuff here, including:
Cust, a longtime journeyman who joined the A's in May and was one of the surprise stories of the season on his way to leading the team in home runs and RBIs, was the only current Athletics player named.
"We had one current player mentioned in the report, and we will address that internally," Beane said.
Cust was mentioned in the report as having a discussion with Larry Bigbie, a former player who was interviewed in the course of the Mitchell investigation, when the two were playing for Baltimore's Triple-A affiliate in Ottawa in 2003. According to the report, "Cust eventually asked Bigbie if he had ever tried steroids. Bigbie acknowledged he had, and Cust said that he, too, had tried steroids. Cust told Bigbie that he had a source who could procure anything he wanted, but Bigbie informed him he already had a friend who could supply him."
Semi - interesting, but this one got my attention:
A player who has been with several organizations, including the A's under Howe, who requested anonymity because he's still in the Majors, said he wasn't sure if managers and coaches were aware of drug use in the clubhouse. But he was outspoken when asked if he was aware of which players were using while he was in Oakland.
"It was pretty common knowledge," he said. "Guys talked about it openly. ... If you wanted to use, you knew who to approach about it. It was uncomfortable for the guys who were clean, for sure. The guys using might take your job, even if they aren't the player you are without the drugs. And by no means was Oakland unique. I've seen it everywhere.
"Fortunately, it's fading. It's taboo to talk about it now. And hopefully this report speeds things up."
Let the guessing begin. Had a friend who used to charter the Oakland A's flights out of KaiserAir in Oakland. Told him that, and without skipping a beat, he says "Scott Hatteberg." I ask why, and the guy says he discussed roids at length with Hatteberg one night with a flight delay, and the guy was really passionate and angry about them. It's interesting because Hatteberg fits all the clues the reporter gives - he's been with several big league teams and still plays in the majors, and played at a time when Howe managed us. Did a little bit of looking, and here's the current MLB players that played for Howe as well:
Matt Stairs
Scott Speizio
Tony Batista
Kenny Rogers
Ramon Hernandez
Tim Hudson
Mark Mulder
Barry Zito
Luis Vizciano (language barrier)
Johnny Damon
Jermaine Dye
Eric Byrnes
Jason Isringhausen
Chad Bradford
Ray Durham
Olmedo Saenz
Esteban German
Aaron Harang
Ted Lilly
Ricardo Rincon (language barrier)
Scott Hatteberg
Take your pick
To me it just seems like a fringe positional player making the comments, I dont know why.... so I tend to agree with Hatteberg. I'd also consider Eric Byrnes, who likes to mouth off a bit... but you also can't put it past the well traveled Kenny Rogers
