The Texas Rangers have reportedly acquired catcher Bengie Molina from the San Francisco Giants for pitcher Chris Ray and a player to be named later.
USA Today reported the trade Wednesday night and said the deal still has to be approved by commissioner Bud Selig.
Molina, who will turn 36 on July 20, is hitting .257 with three homers and 17 RBI this season. He would figure to become Texas' starting catcher, supplanting Matt Treanor and Max Ramirez.
Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been languishing at the Triple-A level for the Rangers most of this season, while Taylor Teagarden is also in the minors.
It would also mark a return to the American League for Molina, who started his career with the Angels in 1998. He also played for Toronto in 2006 before joining the Giants as a free agent the following season.
Ray, a 28-year-old right-hander has compiled a 2-0 mark with a 3.41 ERA and a save in 35 games this season. He also has a pair of blown saves.
