April 6-8: LA Dodgers @ SFO

Post#1 » by Hopper15 » Fri Apr 6, 2007 10:50 pm

No Jason Schmidt in this series. He's starting their home opener on Monday. We can't lose another divisional series at home.

Probables

Brad Penny, RHP @ Noah Lowry, LHP

Scouting Report:
Dodgers: The staff enigma. Sixteen wins can't be ignored, but his bumpy second half last year and a stiff shoulder this spring are red flags. He's most effective when he doesn't try to overthrow, but sometimes it's hard for hard throwers not to try hard to throw hard. Perfecting any offspeed pitch would be huge.

Giants: Lowry strained his right oblique in the Giants' home opener last season and never fully recovered. He now admits that he might have overcompensated for the injury by falling into some bad habits with his pitching delivery. That's trouble for Lowry, who must be mechanically sound to reach full effectiveness with his finesse-based array of deliveries. When Lowry's "on," his changeup is one of the best in the National League. And he throws hard enough to keep hitters off-balance.

Derek Lowe, RHP @ Russ Ortiz, RHP
Scouting Report:
Dodgers: Lowe's debut Monday in Milwaukee couldn?t have gone worse. He created repeated trouble with five walks in four innings and received little help from his outfield defense. His early exit forced the Dodgers to get into their bullpen quickly. Lowe pitched just as poorly in last year?s opener and still won 16 games.

Giants: It's entirely possible that Giants fans won't notice any change in Russ Ortiz since he left the club after the 2002 season. He has recaptured the delivery he used then -- simply put, bringing his arm back in a semicircle as he prepares to throw. This imparts force and movement on his pitches, which he lacked for the last two seasons as he merely hoisted his arm upward before releasing the ball. Ortiz and the Giants are fully confident that he's no longer the pitcher who struggled to a 5-19 record in 2005-06.

Randy Wolf, LHP @ Barry Zito, LHP
Scouting Report:
Dodgers: In his Dodgers debut against Milwaukee on Tuesday night, Wolf kept his club close but was beaten by the long ball. He struck out five and walked only one without making a ton of pitches. He's 4-3 against the Giants lifetime, but 0-2 at AT&T Park.

Giants: Zito hopes for a better second outing against the Dodgers after a shaky start against San Diego in the opener. Zito threw five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and four hits in a 7-0 loss to the Padres. Zito is 1-0 against the Dodgers with a 3.00 ERA in two career starts.
