Giants In Market For Kris Benson

19th December, 2007 - 2:03 pm
San Francisco Chronicle - As the Giants continue their search for a third baseman and middle-of-the-order hitter, they are not closing their eyes to other spots on the diamond.

Ron Schueler, one of general manager Brian Sabean's new senior advisers, attended a workout in Phoenix on Monday for free-agent starter Kris Benson. Representatives from about nine teams watched the former Pirates, Mets and Orioles right-hander throw 60 pitches in a bid to show he is back from a shoulder operation that cost him the 2007 season.

Cain, Lincecum, Zito and Lowry are locks. I guess we could use him as a fifth starter, but what's the point? I'd rather give those starts to Misch or Sanchez.

Hm...I dont like. I believe the Giants are figuring Sanchez will be gone before the season. I believe so too packaged with Lewis for 3B or 1B. However, I think Correia did enough to earn a shot at the number 5 starter. I've never been a Benson fan myself.

Yeah a package of Sanchez/Lowry and Lewis seems to make the most sense.
Maybe they're going to package a deal for Joe Crede if he passes a physical.

The only reason they'd be considering Benson is if they're ready to deal Lowry.
