Let's at least discuss Halladay

Post#1 » by Stanford » Thu Jul 16, 2009 9:49 pm

I think it's pretty unlikely that Doc gets traded this season and considerably less likely that he's traded here. But the Giants have been mentioned in the same sentence as 'Halladay' enough times to at least talk about it.

For what it's worth, Evan Roberts of WFAN has reportedly heard that the Giants are in talks with Toronto for Halladay and Rios. Ok, heavy on the italics but it's a weak report.

He's reporting that the package would consist around a package of Jonathan the unhittable ball Sanchez and prospects. It doesn't mention which prospects, which makes the report pretty useless, but it at least means something that we made contact.

So a few questions arise. Are you at all interested in Halladay at this point? If so, are any prospects off limits? What sort of package would you be willing to send back? How much better would a Halladay move make us this year and next?

Personally, I'd be interested in Halladay as long as it didn't involve Posey or Bumgarner, which is to say not very interested at all.

The players needed to get Halladay would be at least one of Posey, Bumgarner, Alderson, and Villalona, plus Sanchez plus more prospects. We don't need Roy Halladay. But what about Matt Holliday?

Because the Jays are wanting to dump Rios along with Halladay, the asking price wont be as a high as one might think. No way you put Bum or Posey in the mix. I would also try to avoid Villalona if possible but wouldnt be opposed to switching him and Alderson.

I would sure as hell do something like Sanchez, Alderson, Winn/Nate S./Bowker, (Winn expires and they are all about saving money right now) and pick a middle IF. Two good young arms and two fielders for Halladay and taking a big contract off their hands.

To go with a Lin, Halladay, Cain with Pablo and Rios in the middle of the order, no team would want to play us in the playoffs.

Holliday has an OPS of 790 right now, right around his career OPS away from home. He's a career 740 OPS at AT&T.

I know we need a hitter, but Holliday would have no where near the effect on our team as Halladay would. If all it takes to get Doc is either Alderson or Villalona, Sanchez and prospects that don't include the original four, (I believe that's a deal the Jays would turn down if Mad or Posey weren't included) I'd take that right now. Gives us two postseasons (I'd hope) with a Lincecum-Halladay-Cain, and then we'd get two picks when Doc leaves in FA.

If the Giants didn't already have arguably the best combined pitching staff in the majors right now, I would be first in line for a Halladay trade, but as it is now, I don't see it happening.

I wouldn't do it. Sure, our rotation would be one of the best EVER, but then how would we afford to re-sign Halladay and give Lincecum a decent extension (have you SEEN what he is making right now?!).

Funny thing is, I remember when some were talking about trading Sanchez for Rios before the season started...

I don't think we would re-sign Halladay. The thinking being, we'd make up the value of the lost prospects with the ~50 starts we'd get from him and the two picks we'd get when he left in FA.
