'08 over? What to do for '09?

Post#1 » by Argyle » Mon May 5, 2008 6:22 pm

Continuing from the Yankees' series thread.

I think we all have a feeling of apathy about this years' club.

The question is what to do for next year?

Rebuild or try to challenge?
Unload Ichiro for top dollar?
Ditch Bavasi?
Go after more high price FA busts?
Find some power?
Replace McClaren?
Bedard and Silva (until yesterday) seem like good pickups, with Felix could be a good rotation for a couple years. Where do we find a 4th starter and middle relief (assuming Putz still has it and just isn't 100%)
Is Putz pulling a Guardado?

I'm tired of being mediocre.

I think its to early to give up this year. Although even if we do finish decently I would hope that Bavasi wouldn't come back.

Richie is off the books after this year and I think Vidro might be to, but he might have an option.

In my opionion and I know much less about baseball then I do about basketball, I think we need a new LF and SS at the minimum.

Raul would be good as a DH or maybe at first, but he is terrible out in left.

I just dislike betancourt. I think he is an overrated fielder and has a bad bat. Plus I just feel like our team is slow and that he should be faster. Sometimes when I watch him I think he just doesn't try that hard.

Interestingly, I don't think Betancourt is bad at all....

I think the outfield is shaky at best defensively, outside of Ichiro.

Most of the problems seem to lie in the inconsistent bats and bullpen, plus a 4th starter... I don't know how to rectify the situation though...

I love Betancourt. Don't want him going anywhere.

We need to replace Richie with a RELIABLE big-bat. That is the top priority above anything else. Whether we get that big bat to be DH, 1B, or OF, we need someone who can jack homers and hit at a high clip. Not sure who is available though.

Ibanez needs to be moved to the DH spot.

Not worried about the rotation at all. Its pretty solid.

Bullpen will be fine over time.

We just need some offense.

i also think it's still to early to call this season off. i can't find the standings on how the M's were doing last year, but they had their bad share of games and still managed to finish above expectations.

but what really bothers me is the lack of consistency and of identity this team has. i really don't know to think of the M's as an offensive team, a little ball team, a pitching team, a harball team, a what?

i also think that there might be too much veterans that aren't helping and that need to go. but i also don't see that much of a young talent to see a brighter future.

I hate betancourt. He is so overrated defensively. Sometimes I feel like he doesn't even really try for some balls that he could get if he just wanted to hustle.

He is terrible at the plate too. If he was at least fast and could steal some bases then he wouldn't be nearly as bad, but he is not fast and doesn't steal.

Think about it. Our offense is terrible. What positions do we up grade.

like TheUrbanZealot said in another thread, maybe it's time to rebuild the M's.

i'm thinking that felix and maybe bedard & putz could be the only untouchables for the M's and start shipping players while they are "high" on value to get some young talent and start building a new identity for this team.
