Is it only two years ago we were signing Carlos Silva for $10 a year? And now Bedard gets $1.5? It's tough to wrap the mind around that one.

Actually it was $12m a year for Silva, but yeah.

For some reason, during Bedard's tenure in Seattle to date, all the talk has been about how there was no chance the team could possibly re-sign him, that there was no amount of money they could offer him that would induce him to stay. It calls to mind this ancient proverb: "suck it, haters."

One thing I must add. Ive seen more detailed info on the contract and it is:
2010:1.5 mil (incentives up to around 8.5-8.6mil)
2011:2nd year is an 8 million mutual option (either he or the team can choose to have him stay on )

It is effectively a 2 year deal for 13-16 million if he pitches even decently. If he stay injured, dies or sux it up, its at worst a 2yr 9.5 million contract.

Mutual Options are rarely agreed upon. Lets say Bedard comes out in June and pitches as well as he dead 2 years ago for 110+ innings. He now opts out of his contract and can get a bigger one on the market. If he falls apart and can't pitch until September and is iffy then, we won't accept the contract. I'd assume Mutual Options are exercised less than 50% of the time. So at worse it's a 1 year 1.5 million dollar deal. If it costs us any more that means we're getting production. yay.

Just go back a couple of years,BBavasi wanted to sign Bedard long term we would be paying him 15 mill a season right now. I do love having him back on our team he is nasty when healthy, but ex-hippie was so right about the trade that brought him here it was bad, really bad! I was so wrong ,thought he was a no1 and we needed him, man did we take it in the shorts on that one!

This is good. I was all for resigning him on the cheap. Bedard as a 4th or 5th starter the last 3 months of the season...I'll take a flier on that.

Lee had a bone spur removed from foot. Not even in a cast. Never like to hear the words surgery, but this sound like nothing to get worked up over.
