Few players in the history of the franchise inspire more mixed feelings than Charlton. For a while, he was reviled by M's fans, and that's saying something on the team that has used Bobby Ayala, Jose Mesa and Heathcliff Slocumb as its closers. But suddenly Charlton found a second wind in the magical 2001 season, and all was forgiven. Extra credit to him for voluntarily coming back to the franchise twice as a player, like Jeff Nelson. Now he's coming back a third time, so he must really like it there. And I love his attitude towards pitching; he'd knock his mother down if she were crowding the plate.

I'm a big Norm Charlton fan, so I agree that he'll be an asset as a bullpen coach. Stottlemyre, though--what should be expected of him?

I always thought our bench was light on old crusty a-holes, so I'm glad we got that taken care of...

I like Charlton. Everyone else I could care less about.

well, i don't remember that much of charlton, but you guys seem to think he's a very good option.

and about stottlemyre, will he be the pitching coach? i also don't remember how good or bad he was with the yankees...

Well, he's got a hell of a lot of experience. And World Series rings as well, including not only those '90s Yankees teams but the 1986 Mets. He must have been doing something right with that staff... Gooden, Darling, Fernandez, Ojeda, Orosco, McDowell, etc. He's also a Yakima native, and there have been rumors for years that he would someday want to come back and coach the M's. So I'm glad to see it finally happen.

Now the M's have hired Lee Elia as a consultant. I hear he really admires and appreciates fans who come out to the games, with nothing but wonderful things to say about them. (Caution: linked article is not for children.)

That article (and my paycheck) made my day.

Now the Mariners have hired Sam Perlozzo as the final coach to complete McLaren's staff. McLaren was probably quoted as saying how much better he feels having a worse manager than him on his staff.

EDIT: Spoke WAY too soon. From the RealGM wiretap:
