Richie Sexson
What are our options here?
Do we...
A) Waste another year hoping he's going to come around?
B) Trade him? What can we get? Doubtful much of anything...
C) Release him? He seems like a nice enough guy, good clubhouse presence, but worth 13 mil a year to be a nice guy?
D) Stab him with a fork until he starts swinging for base hits instead of the fences?
I'm exhausted watching this guy try to play baseball.

(E) Get over our silly obsession with batting average and be happy he's putting up .379/.478 through the one week (sample sizes be damned).

Statistics in general can go to hell.

Then what basis do you have for saying he's not playing well?

I'm not Sexson's biggest fan, I mean who is any more, but in moments such as these where I'm not reacting in real time to something happening in a game...I don't think Sexson's performing all that horribly. And I think his OPS demonstrates that.
Would I like to see him get a few more base hits? Perhaps come through with said hits when runners are on base? Yes, but for now he's doing a pretty good job of getting on base and demonstrating some power. For an aging first baseman with declining bat speed, his performance hasn't been as bad as it's being made out to be.

Interviews with the media? If he sounds positive or sad we should be able to tell the difference.

Sry I was referring to Statistics class. You mentioned "sample sizes." That stuff blows.

Sweezo is being way too kind.
Maybe I've missed his "better" performances, but whenever I see Sexson, it seems like he is striking out while swining at horrible pitches. That's the thing. His discipline is just crap right now.
He's walking a bit more, which is good, but I can't wait until he is outta here. This the last year of his contract?

Yeah, he's out after this year.

Dan Johnson was released by the A's....surprising move considering he can hit.
A left-handed power bat who can get on base via BBs....he can be our DH.
He doesn't really hit for average but also doesn't strike out as much as Sexson.
M's should take a chance at this guy.

Oh, sorry. I was gearing up for an argument. Never mind.
I was surprised to see Oakland give up on Johnson... maybe he didn't pan out as hoped but he's still a marginally useful bat. Johnson hits lefties and righties about equally well (as does Sexson), so he probably wouldn't add much if the M's picked him up and went for the platoon.
I still want to continue to give Sexson a chance -- he never was and never will be a big batting average guy, but he still does other things well, and he's off to a decent start this year. The strikeouts are barely relevant.

I'd like to see Clement come up and possibly platoon as a DH/1B/C not too long down the line from here.
Clement can't possibly be worse than Sexson at the plate, and maybe he can play 1B. Is there any truth to the notion that Clement might end up being a first baseman, rather than a catcher?

If you want to talk about bringing Clement up to replace someone who isn't pulling his weight in the lineup, I suggest you look to Clement's current position. I know it's early in the season, but Johjima's .118/.211/.147 is a level of suckitude beyond anything Sexson has ever done. Why isn't there a thread knocking him?

Probably because Kenji has batted around .290 for the past couple years and Sexson hit .205 last year. We have faith Johjima will bounce back, just like we thought Sexson would last year, but didnt.

Probably because Johjima's still pretty valuable defensively and people sort of expect catchers, especially good defensive ones, to hit anemically. Sexson's playing a premium offense position and he's bad at every facet of the game.
Not that I agree with giving Johjima a free pass for suckitude but he's still more valuable than Sexson even if he's hitting his weight.
