Can we please be done with this experiment? I mean how much more does he have to prove how bad he is until people realize he, quite possibly, is the worst 10+ million dollar signing in the history of sports. There is no excuse anymore- he's been pitching regularly for some time in the offseason between the WBC and spring training. I don't even want to recalculate what his ERA is between the two, and this is AFTER he guy has supposedly come back in much better shape?
I really really really hope Don W. shows some gumption and either:
a) use him in the bullpen
b) release him
I can't see anyone even wanting to take a chance on this guy even if we had to take on a 20 year contract in return.
We have revamped the defense and this guy is still more horrible than ever. Please don't tell me you guys think we should use him as our 5th when we have capable guys like RRS waiting in the wings...

As bad as Silva's contract is, lets' not forget this guy's albatrossian contract:

It still makes me shudder when I think about it.

Well how can we forget about him- BUT- at least he was serviceable for his 1st year- when we won 60+ games. If you take the last couple of years of VB's contract, yeah- that was pretty rough. But still- Silva hasn't given us anything. I thought Sexson took the cake (and still thinks he does from an offensive standpoint), but at least he also gave us some pop...
It is just so disheartening watching Silva because you know he's good for at least 6 runs in 5 innings...

The thing with Baker though is that he hamstrung the heck out of us, as any long term NBA contract can with the CAP. The NBA is unforgiving in that regard.

Agreed, but the cap has also made bad expiring contracts (e.g. Kwame Brown, Wally Szerbiak, Raef Lafrentz, etc.) valuable trading chips as they will always be in demand by teams looking to save money or make a big splash in the FA market. But yeah, those are only considered somewhat valuable in their last year or two—you have to suffer through years of misery before you (hopefully) get to parlay a bad investment into some desirable roster pieces.
Personally I'd like to see Silva either cut or moved to the bullpen so we can give his spot in the rotation and innings to somebody (anybody) who has a future with this team. Silva is a textbook example of a sunk cost and the sooner we move on the better.

Our SP depth on these team isn't all that great. Who do you put in Silva's place if you demote him?
Team's not going anywhere this year...it won't kill anyone to throw Silva out there with an improved defense behind him and see what happens.

Re: Carlos Silva
Garrett Olson, or maybe Jason Vargas?
But, for now, I'd keep Silva around for a while. The goal is to rehabilitate his trade value. Mind you, he'll never fetch any real value. But if he has a decent season, then heading into 2010 he's got 2 years left for a total of $24 million. And maybe if the M's can eat, say, a third of that, some team could take a flyer on a veteran for two years at $8 million per. Or a team could take on the whole thing but ship back a player who has equally ugly contract but might be a better fit for the M's. If Silva keeps getting opportunities and keeps getting killed, then maybe we think hard about the drastic solutions blackery3000 is suggesting, sunk costs or no.
I could also see demoting Silva for a while if it looked like he needed to be motivated, but I don't sense that is the case.

Re: Carlos Silva
I just don't think it's going to happen...the team doesn't appear poised to admit that Miguel Batista is a sunk cost, and there's no reason Batista should be on this roster over a younger player with some hint of upside.
