Will The M's Be Over .500 Again This Year?

Post#1 » by Bulltalk » Fri May 29, 2009 6:43 pm

It's May 29th and the M's are 22-26. Simple question: Will the M's get at least one game over .500 again this season? Yes or no? Just curious as to the level of faith in this team with you all.

I'll actually say yes. We're 24-26 right now, after Lopez hit that 3 run, 2 out HR in the 9th to force extras, and Yuni sacrificed the go-ahead run in to beat LA.

Our pitching is actually very good right now. With Silva shoved out of our sights, consider:

Felix (5-3, 3.41)
Bedard (3-2, 2.48)
Wash (3-3, 3.45)
Vargas (2-0, 1.65)

And Olsen is pitching well for us, too, but Jaku seems like he's still in control of the 5th spot, and he's either money or Carlos Silva. We really don't know until he shows up to the park.

Anyway, the pitching is good. It's been dynamite the last two weeks, and outside of a Washburn shelling in LA two or three starts ago, it's been among the best in baseball since the Minnesota trip. In June, we've got:

Baltimore (6)
Minnesota (3)
Colorado (3)
San Diego (6)
Arizona (3)
LAD (3)
NYY (1)

This is a great opportunity to win some games against some poor ball clubs. I think we'll be over .500 come July, barring injuries and what have you. It'll be interesting to see if Texas comes back to Earth, or whether LAL has been able to make a run with all that top-flight pitching they have.

Well, I wasn't sure...but it looks like we are going to sweep the Angels [who, by the way, can suck it] and Baltimore's up next. So yeah, I think we'll get back over .500.

Now...what does that do to all those trades we were expecting?

All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't watch the Mariners game today. One look at the box score to know it would have been the equivalent of squeezing lemons into my eyes.

Yeah, it was painful. I left when we were up 8-1.

So I check the box score and see what looks like a complete and bizarre meltdown. I wonder to myself, what could anyone have said that would so severely jinx the team like that?

I can just picture Sweezo in the dugout while a teammate is working on a no-hitter through eight innings. All the teammates are sitting way over on the other end of the bench, and Sweezo just moseys on over, pats the pitcher on the back and says "well, this one's almost in the books, well done!"

Well it seems like if the M's are going to tease us again, and get back over .500, it's probably going to have to come in this next 18 game stretch. It's possible for the M's to make a little move here, but, of course, they're going to have to learn to fire on more cylinders than they've been accustomed to. After tonight's game, the M's are 26-28, in 3rd place, and 6 games back of the 1st place Rangers.

Fri, Jun 5 Minnesota
Sat, Jun 6 Minnesota
Sun, Jun 7 Minnesota
Tue, Jun 9 @ Baltimore
Wed, Jun 10 @ Baltimore
Thu, Jun 11 @ Baltimore
Fri, Jun 12 @ Colorado
Sat, Jun 13 @ Colorado
Sun, Jun 14 @ Colorado
Tue, Jun 16 @ San Diego
Wed, Jun 17 @ San Diego
Thu, Jun 18 @ San Diego
Fri, Jun 19 Arizona
Sat, Jun 20 Arizona
Sun, Jun 21 Arizona
Tue, Jun 23 San Diego
Wed, Jun 24 San Diego
Thu, Jun 25 San Diego

Because after this 18 game stretch, they go on this hideous 9 game road trip:

Fri, Jun 26 @ LA Dodgers
Sat, Jun 27 @ LA Dodgers
Sun, Jun 28 @ LA Dodgers
Tue, Jun 30 @ NY Yankees
Wed, Jul 1 @ NY Yankees
Thu, Jul 2 @ NY Yankees
Fri, Jul 3 @ Boston
Sat, Jul 4 @ Boston
Sun, Jul 5 @ Boston

We'll see.

Our starting pitching is good enough to get us over .500 again. Felix, Bedard, Washburn, and Vargas is nice.

Offense definitely needs to start producing more though. With the amount of hits Ichiro has been racking up, we should be scoring at a decent clip. Oh wait, I forgot; Adrian "I swing at more balls than any player in baseball" Beltre has been hitting 3rd or 4th for most of the year.

And then they immediately come out of the gate, and blow a great start by Felix, as TT mentioned in the other thread. These kinds of losses just keep piling up, seem to just be our systemic fate with our current batting lineups.

Actually 2 more wins from here to get back above .500 ball. But we're quibbling. The Mariners HAVE to get on a roll here. They only have 13 games left of this favorable 18 game stretch against weaker opponents. Then the schedule gets harder for them. Now or never IMO in their attempt to tease us one more time in any kind of a significant way before folding up the tent on any misbegotten dreams of competing for the division title.
