It's official: Bedard on DL

Erik Bedard, who missed his last start with shoulder inflammation has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 7. He was scratched from his scheduled start last Saturday, but was initially expected to return to the rotation this Friday. That date was pushed back to Saturday, but after undergoing a throwing session here in San Diego on Tuesday, Bedard apparently felt more discomfort. He is eligible to come off thte DL June 23.

As I reported earlier, Mike Carp is here from Tacoma and has been activated. He will start at first base tomorrow when Russ Branyan leaves to attend his grandfather's funeral.

I'll have more as it develops. Commence with the wailing.

I hope it's nothing serious. I'm looking forward to seeing Carp!

I'll be glad when we're done with him. He's talented, but he won't be worth the investment to keep him.

Agreed in general. The problem, of course, is that Bedard is easily the most important figure in the ongoing debate about what direction the M's should take the rest of this season. Either they're going to try and contend with Bedard near the front of the rotation, or they're going to stockpile prospects with Bedard as by far the most valuable trading chip. It's not a good day when both options seem to be taken off the table. And maybe Bedard comes back soon, but even then, it's going to be a reminder to other teams that he's always a health risk.

And now, if the M's should pull off a sweep of the Padres, they will return with a 33-33 record for a 6 game homestand against Arizona and San Diego, two of the weakest teams in MLB. Bedard, apparently, would be ready to go for the 2nd series sometime next week.

You can't help but feel that if the M's do well these next 7 games, they will just be continuing to build their house-of-cards about being viable division contenders, meanwhile whittling down the days and potential trade value of the likes of Bedard, Washburn, and Beltre.

This is just an interesting and gnarly little place for our new GM to be in now. It's easy for me to understand how he could be a little hesitant and waffling here. At some point soon, however, he's going to have to be decisive in his outlook, whatever the result of that may be.

We just got word on Erik Bedard. The MRI taken yesterday in San Diego found -- absolutely nothing. His shoulder is fine. When asked about what could have been bothering Bedard all this time, manager Don Wakamatsu said maybe "a slight bursitis.''

So, that part is good news. Now, here's the part I'm a little leery about, just based on last year. Bedard will resume his regular workout routine in three days, once the dye injected in his shoulder for the procedure starts to dissipate.

And then, if all goes well, the plan is to activate him once the team plays in New York against the Yankees 11 days from now -- at best.
