Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu just told us Erik Bedard will undergo exploratory surgery on his labrum area and the bursa complex in his left shoulder on Friday. No wored on whether he'd be able to pitch again in a best case scenario, but realistically, his season is done.
Lets hope it's not serious.

I wonder how much his stock will fall in the market this off season? There's a part of me, as ridiculous as this may sound, that would sign him if the price was right, the contract wasn't long, and it possibly being more incentive-based in nature. You know, roll the dice. I know I'm in the minority on this. At the right price/terms, however, it might be worth the gamble, considering how our possible starting pitching corp next year is lacking in its veteran status.
Of course, if it costs too much, and we get locked into anything that might hamstring us...forget it.

I don't disagree. If he's cheap and sets up a low risk/high reward scenario, then I'd be all about it. I mean, if he ever does stay healthy, he's a hell of a pitcher.
Then again, erasing even more of Bavasi's legacy is appealing in its own right. But for the betterment of the team, I'd resign him if he came cheap.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgnsArthroscopic surgery on Bedard’s pitching shoulder Friday repaired a torn labrum and cleaned up other fraying in the joint, according to manager Don Wakamatsu. Dr. Lewis Yocum, who performed the surgery in Los Angeles, estimates Bedard will be able to throw again in four to six months.

So now the team's chances of offering him arbitration in the offseason are officially zero, negating any chance of compensatory picks. Bedard did say, for the first time in the year and a half he's been a Mariner, that he wanted to re-sign with the M's. I don't doubt his sincerity, but I'm not sure what the odds are. He'll have to be signed relatively late, and maybe with an incentive-laden one-year deal.

I can understand and swallow every criticism of Bedard, and frustration caused by Bedard. When all this passes through me, however, I look at all the available FA pitchers out there and don't see a solid #2 starter among them. The fact is that, in spite of the maddening nature of this guy and his injuries, when he's healthy, on the mound and pitching, Bedard IS a solid #2 starter, perhaps one of the better ones out there.
I think the ultimate end to this soap opera is if we cut bait with Bedard and he ends up pitching very well for another team. Wouldn't that just be the final suck of this suckfest?
