Dallas Mavericks' Johnson thinks Harris is becoming All-Star

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Sun Jan 27, 2008 6:36 pm

Coach thinks point guard's game could hit All-Star level next season

It happened before he turned his left ankle. And before he got a double-thick tape job at halftime to stabilize the achy joint.

And way before he erupted for 16 second-half points Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers on that gimpy ankle, Devin Harris had a nice, big smile run across his face in the pregame locker room.

He'd just been informed that Avery Johnson is predicting next-level success for Harris next season.

"Devin Harris has grown," Johnson said. "Next year, you may be talking about Devin Harris as an All-Star. Who knows? That would be a thrill."

If Johnson was guilty of anything with that statement, it wasn't of overhyping Harris. If anything, he's selling the 6-3 point guard short this season.

New security at guard

Mavs settle into a safety net with Devin Harris as the point man

In a conference loaded with talented point guards, the Mavericks appear to be catching up to the competition.

Devin Harris has sparkled in the latter portion of the season's second quarter. Whether or not he feels less of a burden since coach Avery Johnson lifted most of his play-calling duties, Harris has given the Mavs a shot in the arm, emerging as a third go-to player who evens things considerably against powerhouse rivals in the Suns and Spurs, who have their own Big Threes.

In the past 11 games, Harris has averaged 16.2 points and 5.7 assists. He's accomplished his scoring spike through an economy of shots and precision accuracy, while still effectively operating the offense through Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard.

That was just wrong putting Terry and Stack on the all-star ballot instead of Harris.

Regardless, with popular names like Iverson, Nash, Paul, Parker and Davis out there just at the point, I seriously doubt he would be voted in this year.

and if you live in the world of motives. You might be thinking that the timing of this compliment is a conicidence? With Kidd wanting out of NJ and NJ saying they are looking at all offers and Mavs Coach saying his point guard is an all star in the making? It is a slow sunday.

I see Harris as an early table setter and a closer. He is coming along very nicely, and hads emerged into a real factor on this team, finally. It has been frustrating watching Paul Felton and others step ahead of Devin. He has now stepped closer or even with that ilk of player.

Harris>>>Terry this season. Terry is only useful when he is hot, wich is once in a blue moon nowadays. Harris is good at D, attacks the basket and generally rounding out to be very solid. Consistency is key.

If harris could be the equivalent of Derek Harper from back in the day, that would be a great. Harper was the third player on a great team, improving his scoring every year. Strong D player, good distributor. He was an SG in college, and emerged once he figured out how to tplay the position. Sound familiar?

With Paul, Deron, Nash, Parker, etc. all in the West... Harris would have to play unbelievable to get more votes than those guys... I dont see it happening in the next few years anyways... Ive been wrong before though
