Actually, mudyez is right in the sense that Popovich made the same coaching mistake against us that Avery made against GSW: he adapted to the other team to try to avoid a mismatch rather than playing the game his way.

It's a little ironic how all this has worked out. I mean Avery, who has fairly intimate knowledge of the Spurs, beats the Spurs in the playoffs by coaxing/allowing Popovich to adjust to the underdog Mavs, rather than vice versa. Then, the following season, Nellie does the same thing to Avery.

One huge difference is that the Mavs have arguably the best offensive player in the league that forces teams to match up with them.

The Warriors have the greatest coach to take advantage of matchups.

The Spurs stars were also injured in that series.. and there are rumors that Dirk was injured in the Warriors series.

Avery single covered duncan through that whole series... which is unheard of.. proving he was injured and nuetralizing duncan's teammates. And Dirk was doubled and tripled all through the Warriors series and Avery was unable to make them pay.

I remember everyone talking more about Parker being hurt than Duncan. That's not really the point, though.

AJ didn't beat SA with smallball. The Mavs won in the 7th game in OT because Dirk posted up and got fouled by Manu. It was such a close series that either team could've won. And I guarantee you that if they meet again in the playoffs the series will go the same way.

Side point: I find it funny when fans of other teams and sports writers say that the Mavs don't have anyone who can post up when Dirk did just that to win the series against the Spurs. I guess people have selective memories.

never said, it wasnt a very close series...but i doupt dallas would have had a chance, if not with the small-ball...really hurt, that manu made that stupid mistake (giving away a "and one" with a 3 point lead and the series basically won), but thats what happended and we moved on

if pop ever made a mistake it was to bench our big-man instead of overpowering you, but if we compare guys like barry+finley with rasho+nazr it seemed like its really tempting to go with smallball too

...whatever, thats not about the SA-DAL series...I jus think AJ is one of the best 5 coaches (pop, jackson, sloan, riley) in the NBA and if you dont want him anymore, plz give him to us, when Pop retires in some years!
