I'm not sure I would call that winning the lottery.
Believe it or not, even if we won the lottery this would be the draft to trade down (after the pick) because of the depth of the draft AND the number of teams with multiple picks...

This year, Dallas could have a chance at trading a player they draft high for two lower players without the steep talent drop-off that normally occurs after the 4th-5th picks. Of course the ping-pong balls won't bounce our direction in order to land a top 3 pick.
10:20 (pm, 6/29/06) The Mavs take Maurice Ager at No. 28... Ager walks up to the stage in a triple-breasted, oversized beige suit, goes to shake hands with Stern and immediately gets whistled for a foul on Dwyane Wade.

If they bounced our way Sken, I would question everything Evil that is Stern and force myself to swallow accountability. It won't bounce our way at all...
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...

If we somehow ended up with luck and got a top 2 pick there is no way I would trade down. There are two players in this draft that I believe are can't miss NBA stars. I think Beasley and Derrick Rose are going to be great NBA players. So if somehow the Mavs miss the playoffs and are in the lottery and get so lucky that they get a top 2 pick then I would keep that pick and take one of those two guys.

I think there are still question marks about the next group of players who may be stars but are not such locks. Brook Lopez, OJ Mayo, Eric Gordon all could be very good NBA players but all still may have question marks.

Most likely the Mavs would pick 14 or so because this is the Mavs after all and luck is not part of thier vocabulary. If we did have the 14th pick I would look for players like:

D.J. Augustine
Chase Budinger
Hasheem Thabeet (Why most lists have Hibbert higher I have no idea, to me he has a much better chance at being Dikembe then Hibbert)

I would like to get a good SG which this team needs. One that is actually the size of a shooting guard unlike JET and one that can actually shoot unlike Stack. Unfortunately the shooting guards that would be available at 14 would be reaches to take that high:

Chris Douglas-Roberts
Brandon Rush
Courtney Lee (14 is too high to take him)
Shan Foster (Absolutely lights out shooter with great size though 14 is high to take him)
Stephen Curry (Son of Dell who looked great in NCAA tourney but is he again an undersized shooting guard?)

I think the Mavs should take the best player available regardless of position. Clearly they don't need a PF with Dirk and Bass but if that is what is available then you would have to do it.

Unless we have a top 3 pick, our pick should be traded in a package deal with either Stack or Terry to get a decent SG.

The pick and Terry or Stack for one of the following:

Maggette
Mike Miller
Jason Richardson

It makes no sense to take a chance on a player at 14 when our window is only 2 years at the most.

The higher we get from being out of the playoffs, the more likely this thread gets unstickied and goes away...

This is still a real possibility. I will keep it stickied until mavs actually lose the pick.

Teffer, we can't trade the pick (unless it is a trade down/up and we receive a pick in the first round) before it is announced. We would actually have to draft a player for another team, and that can be a sticky proposition.

I don't like the thought of a Milwaukee changing their mind on trading for Tractor Traylor!

Okay. This weekend is the biggest test so far... First the Fakers tonight and the Nashtys on Sunday. Win them both, and we've got a real chance... The only remaining games with against +.500 teams are both at home vs. Utah and New Orleans. Utah like ourselves plays very good at home and not so good on the road. New Orleans game is the final game of the season so New Orleans could be resting starters.

5-2 means we probably lost to both the Fakers and the Suns
6-1 means we probably lost to the Fakers and beat the Suns in Phoenix
7-0 means we win out brutha!

We have a chance and for once I am not over optimizing, I am being very realistic based on last game's play!

Let's hope we go 6-1 as we wonder who we might trade or sign-and-trade to get a draft pick...

in the second round Draft express has us taking with the
22nd pick of the 2nd round
Mavericks Anton Ponkrashov PG/SG/SF
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Ant ... shov-1056/
21 years old; 6'7"; 205 lbs.
Khimki, International
NBA draft.net has us taking at
51. Dallas Sasha Kaun 6-11 246 C Kansas Sr.
http://www.nbadraft.net/admincp/profiles/sashakaun.html
They have Anton going at 45 to Atlanta

PG and C are the areas we need a backup but SG is still a hole but that can get fixed in free agency or via trade.

Time to unsticky this unless you are are drooling over a mid second round pick.

This guy is really interesting. An undersized guard who can fly and dunk with ease. I wonder if how it is possible.

Look at the film. You'd see what I mean.

If we can package JET for Eddie Curry and the pick. I'm all for it.
I won't mind package with Stack to take some salary as well.

But I don't think it's enough for the 4th pick, though.

This thread should be kept up with, I am betting we trade up into the 1st round.

Shan Foster was on my radar back in April but at that time I was thinking late first round for him. So not too bad to get him at 51.
