I just dont get it
Why in the world are we freaking re signing Barea, let alone to a 3yr deal. I realize it's not a ton of money but is there seriously not a better option than that. Diop, Green, & Barea, if that's not screaming 2009 NBA Champions I dont know what is !

Re: I just dont get it
1) First of all, it is only 2 years as the 3rd year is a team option in case he shows improvement; his guaranteed salary ends summer 2010 with everyone else.
2) We need a 3rd string PG to back up Kidd and Terry.
3) Assets to acquire a 3rd string PG include MLE, vet min, rookie min, trade or resign Barea with Early Bird rights.
-a) MLE needed to be spent on a SG, or possibly a C
-b) Players like Lue (who may get LLE, which we don’t have), and as you have already seen, Duhon, will get much more that vet min. And if they did settle for vet min, it won't be with the Mavs
-c) McLeod and every other vet min PG is NOT an upgrade to Barea
-d) No undrafted PG (rookie min) would be bigger impact than Barea
-e) 3rd string anything is not enough of an upgrade over Barea to warrant trading assets.
3) 3rd string PG is good for change of pace and Barea is a great change of pace PG.
4) Barea is better than most of you give credit for
5) We had 7 spots open. That one signing is not going to hurt us.
So there you have it...

J.J. Barea, who proved to be a reliable sparkplug throughout last season, said he is closing in on a three-year deal worth about $4.8 million to return to the Dallas Mavericks.
The third year would be at the team’s option and the first would pay him $1.5 million next season. He said he’ll likely sign the deal Wednesday when the league’s moratorium on signings and trades expires.

Barea will get the job done and I'm perfectly fine with the signing. It's not like he's going to see the court much but he has the speed that provides us with that spark off the bench at times.

Re: I just dont get it
I'm not saying he just absolutley sucks but come on people around here act like he is the second coming of Nash and Kidd at the same time. Yeah it's cool watching him go off and score a lot of points since he looks like a midget out there but when that rarely happens and the fact that he is such a horrible defensive liability I'm just thinking there's got to be more out there than Barea. Not to mention when I saw the headline Barea signed for 3 yrs that kind of threw me off because I didn't really see what warranted that. Not saying he sucks but just more of a frustration that we are not doing anything that is really going to help us out next season. Regardless I know no matter who our 3rd string pg is it wont matter in crunch time.... at least it better not !

Re: I just dont get it
I don't see anyone around here (this year) acting like he is the second coming of anyone. The only one over-reacting is are those totally opposed to signing Barea. I mean, com'n, he is the 3rd freaking string PG. As mentioned before, that role is meant for change of pace and Barea is that.
Unless we trade Terry, players like Lue, Pargo, etc. are all redundant, unnecessary, wasted salary players. Now if we traded Terry and did nothing, then I can share your frustration, but right now, it is a complete non-issue.

Re: I just dont get it
I think the signing of barea is ok. he is the 3rd string point guard and wont have any bigger impact on the team, good or bad. and as JES pointed out, there really isnt anyone out there who is a significant upgrade over barea at this price.

I'm sorry that I dont keep up with every single post but I have seen a few people last year during summer league going on and on about him with those type of comparisons. Regardless I'm not trying to make a big deal about Barea. My gripe is while other teams are going after Maggette, or doing something in the draft and our head line news is Barea for 3yrs, or Diop for the full MLE, or Gerald Green. Thats what I dont get. Not to mention you guys keep saying 3rd string pg who exactly is the 2nd string ? Sounds like Lue is going to be gone and I like Jet but he's a 2. So if Kidd is out that is a huge drop off !

Re: I just dont get it
^^ Terry will probably be the backup pg. The other option would be a guy like McLeod if he plays well in the summer league.

Re: I just dont get it
terry could easily handle the few minutes left at 1. no need for guys like mcleod who are not significant better than barea

The Mavs have limited money to use on outside free agents. Barea can be signed using Early Bird exception, so he does not eat into the available pool.
The Mavs are very thin after the Kidd trade, so they need every available exception to rebuild their bench.

I agree JD. Trades, MLE, and Vet Minimums look like the reality of the Mavs. Let's hope Diop doesn't eat up the MLE himself...
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...
