Josh Smith

Post#1 » by dtownmavs41 » Sun Jul 20, 2008 11:20 pm

There is a story on hoopsworld about the idea of the mavs trading howard for smith. It says that this is just speculation, but where there is smoke there is fire. So hopefully this has some truth behind it.
"Josh Smith proved to be the most valuable player of the Atlanta Hawks postseason run, so why aren't they chomping at the bit to bring the restricted free agent back? The Hawks, who need all the help they can get in their undersized front court, have yet to make Smith an offer. Perhaps they are waiting for interest from around the league to wane -- the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers already opted for proven veterans over Smith -- or perhaps they are contemplating a bigger move.

Some NBA pundits are proposing that the Hawks should re-sign Smith and then trade him to the Dallas Mavericks for Josh Howard. The notion makes sense for the Mavs, who are in desperate need of a defensive-minded power player. Smith can run with the best of the west and at only 22 years old is a solid long-term investment.

Howard would bring one of the more underrated offensive games to Atlanta. The question is, though, what would the Hawks do with their current three, Marvin Williams? They had developed an emerging combination of Williams outside the paint, Smith attacking the rim, and Al Horford defending the basket. How would the addition of Howard shake things up? This deal is all speculation at this point, but as the summer goes on without an offer for Smith, a sign-and-trade could become a more viable option."
I would love to get Josh Smith if it was for just Howard and some filler, excluding Bass. A trade with like Howard, Stack, and someone else would be great. Also, even though it's off topic, why is there no interest in J.R. Smith? Everyone says we need a 3 point shooting SG, so why not him. In 19 minutes, he averaged 12.3 PPG, about 2 APG, about 1 Steal, and 2 RPG while shooting 40% from behind the arc. No team really wants him, and I don't even think the Nuggets do. I don't know how much money we have left to spend, but we could always do a sign and trade with them as well for someone, maybe like a sign and trade for Devean George. I can't check any possible ways we could get them both since a lot of the players don't show up on the two trade machines. I think with the two Smiths, that would greatly help us.

This is just Hoopsworld's spin on Marc Stein's earlier comments about a possible Josh swap and it's a long way from having any substance.

I would do this deal in a heart beat, Josh Smith plays both sides of the floor and doesn't disappear at the end of games, If this could happen I would be a very happy mavs fan.

I don't see Josh Howard working for Atlanta unless Marvin Williams is included. It doesn't make sense for Atlanta to move Josh Smith for him when both the two and three are already filled. Remember Josh Smith is a hometown kid, so whatever rumors you read about him not wanting to be here are false, and I hope more people would stop taking the media so seriously. Josh Smith just wants to get paid and like any organization the ASG need take caution on the amount they offer. I'm assuming the ASG were waiting for Philly or Los Angeles to offer so they could just match and now it basically comes down to just themselves to make a offer.

Atlanta would never do this trade straight up. Dallas would have to pony up the offer for Atlanta to consider trading a young underrated talent like Josh Smith to us.

Return to Dallas Mavericks
