Can you really remember the last time Dallas actually did sign a key free agent? I dont see it coming any time soon either. Knowing Mark Cuban, he'll offer Kidd an extension and acquire huge contracts in the future to screw us financially for years to come.

If by big free agent, you mean a 36year old Kidd, then maybe. If it means retaining Bass, maybe. You you mean an all-star expecting all-star money, not a chance.

Probably not. What attracts big name free agents? Lots of money, endorsement opportunities, the realistic chance to win it all, other big name players, a desirable city, good weather, etc. Dallas might not be on the top of any of those lists any time soon. Certainly not at the bottom, but not at the top, either.

Jason Kidd is the biggest name I think of.
I'd be grateful if Gerald Green becomes a big name. We can match his offers.

LeBron did rank us ahead of L.A. and 2nd after Brooklyn.

Lebron is looking for 50M. We won't be able to offer that much anyway. You don't have as much cap room. Unless the league finally realises how the talents rushes for money, we aren't going to sign Lebron.

If LBJ is what we're looking for, we should:
1. package Josh Howard, Erick Dampier, and Jason Terry for expiring contracts and picks.
2. tank the season for a very high pick.
3. save the legs of Dirk for another year.
4. improve the young guys like Gana, Green, Bass, and Wright as much as we can.
5. ask whether Dirk would agree to restructure his contract to land Lebron.
6. pre-arrange the offseason signing during the regular season.

Darren...I made similar suggestions at the beginning of the off season. However, I would trade Dirk for draft picks, youth, and expirings to begin establishing a supporting cast for Lebron (or a big time FA). Like SD says, we would have to have something to attract him and a good young supporting cast, enormous cap space, and a generous owner might have a chance.

I'd do something like this if I were the Mavs.

Trade Dirk to an east team for draft picks, youth, and expiring.
Trade Howard for a draft pick and expiring.
Trade Kidd for LaFrentz, Outlaw, and Webster
Trade Terry for a shorter contract and 2nd rounder.
Trade Damp for a shorter contract.

The European team is rumored to make 100M, 2 year offer to LBJ.
