How the Mavs front office allowed Jason Kidd's name to increase his value instead of realizing that his age and contract should've been bringing down his value in their eyes we may never know.
For quite some time the Mavs major failing point has been the SG position since they cut Michael Finely. Its a hole they have still yet to fill which obviously means they'd have been better off keeping him the last three years then they were in cutting him loose.
A backcourt of Harris, Finley, Terry, Stackhouse likely would've been enough to get the job done over the past three years and would've resulted in a championship in my honest opinion or at least a much better shot at one.
I also think the pressence of Finley would've kept them from making the mistake extentions for Stackhouse and Terry or at least would've kept the prices down on those extentions.
The frontcourt was actually good enough to win a title with as Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard were the best forward combo in the league until the Celtics put Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett together last year.
The center play when healthy between Diop and Dampier was solid enough to get the job done as well.
The problem has been that they haven't been able to put out a defensive backcourt that can still shoot the basketball well enough to space the floor. No doubt about it that the Harris/Terry backcourt worked but they were going to get exposed against any team that scores most of its points from perimiter players be it Dwyane Wade or the Golden State Warriors collection of 8 wing players who all wanted to score.
The thing about that is, Kidd was on his way down, and Harris is on his way up. I liked the way Harris played for Dallas. He gave Tony Parker fits, he had the potential to be an above-average defensive player, he seemed like a good guy; the kind of player who you won't hear about doing dumb things in the offseason or off the court.
