The Mavericks insist it will be different this time. They have heard Rick Carlisle's words and had a few days to catch his drift.
What exactly the new coach told his players is a little R-rated. But suffice it to say, he's looking for them to be real jerks on the basketball court.
Think Bruce Bowen, and you'll have the right idea.
The only Maverick who has experience with Carlisle, Jerry Stackhouse, said he understands what the coach has in mind.
"We had it when we were in Detroit," said Stackhouse, who played for Carlisle with the Pistons during the 2001-02 season. "We didn't like the other team. We made a conscious effort not to see other teams in shootarounds.
"Nowadays, guys just bait you. Great players, [such as] LeBron James and all these guys, come in hugging in the morning and ready to kill you at night. A lot of guys on this team are capable of playing that way."
Guys like Brandon Bass and Stackhouse. And maybe Josh Howard.
"I think everybody has that in their own way," Bass said. "It's just about being consistent with that attitude."
Carlisle has to hope that being a brute can be an acquired skill, because the Mavericks have never been accused of attending the Rick Mahorn school of hard knocks.
How do you get guys to be nasty? Well, I think hating the opponent is a start," Carlisle said. "You've got to develop that as we go along."

Re: Dallas Mavericks vow to back up tough talk
Training camp update
Thursday: The coaches mixed things up and got some intriguing results. "Today we had Josh Howard with our second group because I wanted to see what his impact would be," Rick Carlisle said. "Not coincidentally, the second group won all the games. I see scenarios when he's definitely the best player on the court with those guys." Howard, by the way, has looked excellent through three days of camp.
Today: Defense has been overshadowed by offense, at least as far as the media's focus, but getting stops continues to be the coaches' priority. The players are happy that the system is not much different from what they are used to. "We've always tried to send guys [opposing offensive players] to the baseline over the years, and that's the same way," Jerry Stackhouse said.
^^^about training camp lol.

The Mavs were a good defensive team under Avery Johnson. Maybe they didn't play dirty, but they were very effective.
Ultimately, it is Finals or bust for Carlisle. Anything else will be seen as failure by Cuban, even though Cuban gave him a team that is really not good enough to do it.

Not quite true. If Rick can build up the values of those players and make an excellent rebuilding team, I'd still consider him a very successful coach.

That statement shows the current state of Mavs fandom. We aren't contending, we are just showcasing our players for trades. Cuban must be proud.

Re: Dallas Mavericks vow to back up tough talk
Any notion of this team being tough in that sense is laughable.
Dirk is as tough as anyone when it comes to playing through pain but how many players in this league are actually intimidated or scared of him?
The same is true for nearly everyone else on the roster with the exception of Stack.
I find it very hard to believe the mavs will be anything other than a soft jump shooting team again.

Re: Dallas Mavericks vow to back up tough talk
If we wanted this tough image, then we should have made a stronger play for Ron Artest... I guarantee we could have put together a more attractive package than Bobby Jackson from the Rockets

^The 2 1st rounders were what got Houston Artest, not Jackson. We reportedly offered Bass+Stack and Sac declined, so I don't see how we could have pulled it off short of Howard. If we had kept our 1st in the Kidd deal it might have been a different story.
