Bass and Green! Please Help Me.

Post#1 » by Maverick Junkie » Sun Oct 19, 2008 3:22 pm

I may be getting ahead of myself, because I am pumped about this season ahead of us, but this scares me. I am sold on the potential of Brandon Bass and Gerald Green, and want them to be on this team for years to come. Their contracts are up after this season, and we do not hold the Bird rights to either of them. Correct me if I am wrong, but both of these players are going to be unrestricted free agents with all we have to offer is the Mid Level and lower level exception to sign both players. That will not be enough. How do we keep these players?

We have Early Bird Rights on Bass and can resign him with that and without touching the MLE:

Early Bird exception

This is the lesser form of the Larry Bird Exception. Free agents who qualify for this exception are called "early qualifying veteran free agents," and qualify after playing two seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. Using this exception, a team can re-sign its own free agent for either 175% of his salary the previous season, or the NBA's average salary, whichever is greater. Early Bird contracts must be for at least two seasons, but can last no longer than five seasons.

A much-publicized example for this would be Devean George, who vetoed his inclusion into a larger trade during the 2007-08 that would have sent him from the Dallas Mavericks to the New Jersey Nets because he would have lost his Early Bird rights.

The league average should be around 5-6 Millionen, that means like MLE. And if Bass doesnt learn defense this season i dont see a team offering him full MLE AND a starter spot in a good team. I think he will stay with a 3/16 or 4/21 Deal, specially since we will play more often Dirk/Bass together in the FC.

We have no rights on Green and have to use Minimum or MLE/part of it. Would be now of course maybe better we had give Green a 2 year deal like Bass to get early Bird rights for 750k more but after that last season of Green...cant blame the Mavs.

Green will be UFA, that means we have to use MLE/part of MLE/Minimum to sign him more

Exactly, sefant77

I really, really hope we resign Bass with our Early Bird rights (the MLE amount is the max we can offer). I'm worried about Memphis stealing him from us as they only have $38.4 mil salary (less than league min) next year after they release Buck & Walker and looking for a PF. Other suiters are the young Blazers, who only have $35.6 mil if they pick up all their options, Oklahoma at $33.1, Hawks at $40.9 and any team willing to spend MLE on a PF.

Green...well, he has proved nothing yet, but if he can do half of what he did last night throughout 82 games, then yeah, I would spend the MLE on him.

We also get the bi-annual next year.

I dont see Memphis going for Bass and spending Caproom if they have with Warrick a Tweener, that can score from the bench. Portland also no way, they will cut/trade unhappy players like Frye/Outlaw. Hawks could be.

I would guess they would go more for a Maxiell (declined a 3/15 Extension with Detroit). Good luck for us there will be probably next offseason a bunch of Bass-type Players hitting the FA.

Bass, Maxiell, maybe Millsap, Gooden...

Well, if we offer kind of MLE money i think he will stay for sure because he knows the Mavs are high on him and he is seeing even with a Dirk i front of him a lot of minutes.

Maybe Bass will be loyal to the team that gave him the chance to earn the millions he'll get. He'll sign a 3 year deal, still being young, and then sign a bigger deal in the future.

I can see a Maxiell - Warrick swap. Actually, I am hoping a trade like that goes down to supress Memphis' interest in Bass. If a trade like that doesn't happen, Memphis is the front runner for Bass. Bass would start immediatly on their team of Gasol / Bass / Gay / Mayo / Conley with Darko / Warrick / Jaric / Lowry / Crittenton filling up the bench.

Since when is Outlaw and Frye unhappy in Portland? They may be traded to upgrade in a 2 for 1 trade, but they are not going to cut them. And if they do, it is even more of a reason to go after Bass.

Hey, i just got an account for realgm but i've been reading posts since the finals run.

i went to the game saturday and green was great if he played like that every night we would have ourselves a championship...but remember, "Every dog has his day" :(

Bass on the other hand i think will be like david west with more of a post game (since west doesnt have one..) i hope mark realizes this and doesnt mess around with a gem in the ruff like he did with nash, HOPEFULLY HE LEARNED and i think he did..

Bass isnt going anywhere... Ive always been a pretty big Gerald Green fan, even when he was in high school, so im hoping he breaks out this year and the Mavs can afford to keep him in the offseason... But I cant really see a scenario where the MLE is not enough to keep him around.

Yeah, we see what you mean, look how many Championships the Suns have won since Dallas let him walk.

I never said he did...Iat least i dont think, but the point i was TRYING to state was i think Cuban won't do that again to a "already good" or "potentially good" player....THATS ALL

Nash was'nt that good in Dallas, not good enough to keep at least. And despite the Suns having an explosive offense, multiple all stars, 2 MVP trophies for Nash alone, they have yet to win anything, not even a Finals appearence.

Good points but you have to admit that we should have been able to receive something in return for Nash ...draft picks and/or Marion, etc... Just letting him go for nothing was a lesson that Cuban should have learned.
I think that was part of the point DIRDtheGreat was making.

As a Blazers fan, my ideal signing for next year would be either Brandon Bass or Jason Maxiell as either one of them will bring something different to our team (some muscle at the 4 spot)

I love Channing however he plays the same game as LaMarcus.. let's just hope no-one signs poor old Darius and we'll be able to throw money around...

Green considers himself to be a pretty loyal guy, and if he gets the shot he feels he deserves in Dallas, he'll want to stay with the Mavs next year. He's from Houston, has family in Dallas, and already took less (about 25% of what he was guaranteed by Denver) to sign with the Mavs, so I think it's a pretty safe bet that even if Gerald commands the full MLE on the open market (which isn't very likely), he'll prefer to stay with the Mavs.

It's a long ways down the line, but I can't see the Mavs losing Green unless they don't want him around anymore.

@LaMark:

Yeah but LMA complements Oden nicely and Frye complements Przybilla nicely.

As Frye (in terms of style of play) = LMA and
Przy (well, at least concerning range on the offensive side and defensive presence) = Oden ...

Frye can also play with Oden, and LMA can play with Przy ...
to me that's perfect. No need for you to bring in Bass...
