I'm prepared for any bashing. This frees us of money at the end of the season by moving Jason Terry's contract that has three years left and Josh Howard's contract that also has two years left. I hated to include Josh, but it's the cherry on top for New York, and you must give to gain some cap relief. New York has started off the fresh season to a good start and this trade provides them with more talent to make a real run at the playoffs.
For what it's worth it's trade checker approved: Trade ID #4810810
Dallas Receives:
David Lee - Qualifying offer at seasons end
Stephon Marbury - Expiring Contract
New York Receives:
Jerry Stackhouse
Jason Terry - Three years left
Josh Howard - Two years left

Would not touch that at all.
If they want to turn $20,840,625 mil of wasted money into useful players, they can have Terry, Stack and George. I would not throw Howard to them for David Lee.

Jason's of no value to any team due to his contract. If we want to free up his contract and money all together will need to give up talent. This gives us a shot at some of the prize free agents over the next two years.

Re: A Idea To Free Us of Money With New York
Howard > free agent willing to sign with this lineup:
Diop /Dampier
Dirk/Lee
George/Williams
Wright
Barea
And that includes free-agents to be Green, Bass, Kidd
And still would not touch theat deal. No homer! Just do not feel like giving NY an early Christmas after we did a trade almost as bad last year with Kidd.
And no, Terry is not so under-valued that Howard is the sweetner to get rid of him. Not even close, dude!
Phoenix fans are willing to do Terry for Barbosa on the trade forum. For salary, it would have to include Wright, George or Williams, but I'd do that 100 times faster than using our 2nd best player to dump our 4th best player.

I dont mind the trade.. Even if there is a slight chance that we can sign a key free agent in 2010 then I say we have to go for it... New York should throw in a pick though IMO

The free agents over the next two years.
Link
Upcoming off-season.
Options at the 3:
Ron Artest
Shawn Marion
Options at the 1:
Allen Iverson
Mike Bibby
Andre Miller
Very limited at the 1 as you can see. We don't need a star at the 1 to be a serious playoff contender. Reuniting Steve Nash with Dirk is a possible two years from now.
Beyond the 1 and 3, Rasheed Wallace is the most serviceable player that we could use. By keeping our bloated contracts we miss out on both years. Josh Howard is far from being the type of 3 that's a second option or the type of player that's a must have. 3's like Josh are very much replaceable.

Re: A Idea To Free Us of Money With New York
I would not give Bibby more than a 1 year 4-6 mil contract.
Same with iverson just because I don't like his game and would not be dissapointed if someone outbid us.
Marbury would have to be a vet min contract or at least a cheap base with incentives.
Miller and Kidd may stay with their current teams, but may also sign cheap somwhere with a core intact.
In order to get a player like Artest and Marion to come play with Dirk and noone else we would have to pay a 5 year 55+ mil deal. Maybe in a S&T, but of who?
I like Howard's 2010 deal better than any of those options.
If the trade as listed went down, counting Lee, Dallas would have $48.1 mil in committed salary with 8 players. With a salary cap of just under $59 mil this year and assuming it goes up by 2 mil, we would have $13 mil to sign a min of 5 players. 4 min contracts of 0.8 mil each would allow us one signing of a FR just under $10 mil.
This trade sucks more and more as I think about it.
For me to even concider such a deal with NY, it would have tro be
Dampier + Terry + Howard + Stack for Marbury + Rose + Lee + 1st round pick.

My idea to free up money with Portland while getting a 3rd string C, a 3rd string PF and a 2nd string "pure PG" and opening up the 2 guard for Green, Wright and George
Terry, Stackhouse for LaFrentz, Sergio Rodriguez and Ike Diogu
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=850911&p=17655316#p17655316
Both teams like it.
Forget NY. Like I said, Terry is not so under-valued around the league that we have to use our 2nd best player to dump our 4th best player. We even get rid of Stack's guaranteed portion next year.

Re: A Idea To Free Us of Money With New York
This is a wasted thought-process. The NY Knicks aren't taking any players or bad contracts from the Mavericks. They wouldn't even pay their own players past 2009--let alone aging has beens that make no sense for the Knicks.
It was a horrific decision to get rid of Harris. Now you have to wait all year and hope you lose enough games to get into position to find some young talented player who will represent starting over.
The NBA is cyclical and you got caught in the back end of a good run. It could take years before this thing plays out and gets back on track.

Brilliant I can tell you've been studying the rosters of other teams a lot more than me. I hope that we can do something like this as I would love for Terry to be gone love Rodriguez to be here I like Diogu's game a little (similar to Bass ) and as a third string center La Frentz gives us at least what we would have had in Fazekas only with experience and more size even though he is older and slower by now. This way we never have to see Terry 0-11 to start a game or Bass at center plus we get a PG that makes JJB tolerable as a third stringer if not out right cuttable.

Signing big name free agents is not an option. They do not want to come to Dallas. If anyone can show me one who has, it will be a first.

New York's main strategy is to open cap room to get LeBron in 2010, so the are not doing any deal that includes contracts that don't expire by then.

Re: A Idea To Free Us of Money With New York
Still waiting for Mav fans to post on this trade:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=851249
Dallas sends: Jason Terry, Desegana Diop, Jerry Stackhouse
Dallas gets: Stephon Marbury, Ike Diogu, Calvin Booth, Roberson
Why: They get a suitable replacement for Terry assuning no rust for cap space
New York sends: Stephon Marbury, Roberson, 2 mil cash
New York gets: Raef LaFrentz, Jason Collins, their own 2nd rounder back
New York saves over $2.7 mil in salary and sends 2 mil to Portland instead of 2.7 to the NBA office as tax. They get one of their own picks back and gets rid of a distraction.
Minnesota sends: Jason Collins, Calvin Booth
Minnesota gets: Desagana Diop, Sergio Rodriguez
Minnisota absorbs salary, but gets a young defensive center to pair with Jefferson, who incidentally, expires at the same time. They also strengthen their PG rotation a little.
Portland trades: Raef LaFrentz, Sergio Rodriguez, Ike Diogu, NY's 2nd round pick
Portland gets: Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, 2 mil from NY to pay for Stack's guaranteed portion next year (aid in buyout).
Portland strengthens their PG rotation with a Seattle native who can play well with SGs that like to have the ball in their hands a lot such as Roy. Terry/Blake can hit the open jumper off of LA posts and Roy's penetration. Terry's contract expires when he is 34 and can mentor players like Bayless along the way.
