While I hope we don't and we start Smith, and RC saying he is ready to play big minutes right now.. I wouldn't be shocked to see us sign an older PG to start and help develop Smith.

I would be shocked if Smith doesn't start. Cuban finally has a shiny new toy, and you know he will want to play with it.

Pretty sure this dude was projected to go #1 at one point. You can't not be pleased with that outcome at the 9th spot. I'm absolutely delighted. Exactly 1 season ago we were lost for hope. Now we have Harrison Barnes who was close to being an All-Star talent for us this season, Nerlens Noel a defensive monster + potentially a top 3 center in the league, AND Dennis Smith Jr. Goodness knows his potential. These 3 guys could be an impressive core for quite a few years.

Super happy with Smith jr. I think he's one of three players in this draft with superstar potensial and he will fit very well in our offence, as long as he buys in.

Also we lost the best shooter in the draft just because we have the brother of Curry in our roster. :banghead:

Carlisle hasn't had a PG drafted this high in a long time. Honestly probably since Chauncey Billups who he worked extremely well with. Billups was considered a bust when Boston got rid of him. Carlisle turned him into an all star.

I disagree. Dennis Smith is a ready contributor. He's only major shortcoming are size and injury history. He's a much better playmaking and floor game than Monk and Ntilikina. And he's a great fit in a system feature a lot of pick-n-roll with a great collection of shooter. Unlike Derrick Rose, he's adequate jumpers. As for his size issue, I don't think it is a huge problem. He does lead all rookies in assists and steals. He seems to say smart things about himself. Yes, the Mavs is playing teamball. That's the sentence I wanted to listen to from any rookie starting PG.

Comparably, Monk is more a Eric Gordon type of sixth man who gets blocks really often in paint. Ntilikina, while having solid tools, is not quite ready to contribute. By the end of his rookie season, he's more ready as a 3-and-d guy instead of a PG. If we're interested in him, we can always sign him to an ugly contract to replace Wes Matthews.

I am quite happy about the 9th pick. But I think we should have landed a late first to pick the bizarre athletic 7-2 footer who's got picked by Orlando at 25. Those two are on top of my wish list actually. Unfortunately, the Mavs pass on an opportunity to get him. But I won't blame them if they only see him as a C. I see some Porzingis in him. His lateral and vertical quickness and speed are outstanding. He shoots very well (over 40% from the field on small sample, though). And he can actually defend bulky big man. I consider him an excellent fit alongside Noel. I think he's even better than Markkanen and Collins even if he's a bit old as a rookie. We have a chance to set most young core starting spots with him being the 4. Meanwhile, Hartenstein follows all the way to 43rd. We should have acquired him rather easily by buying pick. I see him like another Motiejunas with much better outside shots and playmaking skills. But he's more a project compared with the 25th pick of course.

About Monk, he's a better playmaker than his stats in Kentucky shows but still in my eyes he's a SG who occassionaly can play as a PG. If he learns to use his athleticism to his advantage then being drafted in #11 would be a huge steal for the Hornets.
As far as Smith, other than size and his injury history i'm worried about his playmaking and shot-selection. The second of course can improve with time because he's still young but i think he'll be more than a scorer rather than a distributor in his career. That's not necessary bad but i don't see him as an efficient scorer in the NBA.

That's why I want him to be a floor manager as a primary task. Even so, he's the most ready PG on this end despite occassional problems. If we talk about a floor manager, it is him or Lonzo Ball. But the latter will struggle in the worst way on the defensive end. His lateral quickness is just bad. I am more confident Smith can stay in front of his man on regular basis.

Dennis Smith was considered and still is a top 5 talent in the draft. The only reason he fell to 9 for us is that he is only 6'2" If the guy grew 3-4 inches he would have been drafted 3rd behind Ball.

The guy apparently had a 48" vertical in his workout with the Lakers. That's absurd!!

I am happy with the pick but disappointed with the FO. They celebrated instead of trying to get another pick. The draft was deep and a second round pick wasn`t hard to get. A lot of international talent went late in the second round (Vezenkov, Kaba) and both are better than Hammons or Powell in my opinion. Instead Mavs fans have to watch another year of Powell as the backup 4/5. The FO needs to get rid of him and the horrible contract.

An early second round pick would have been even better. There were some great guys left (Rabb, Bell).
Was it impossible to make a trade for a pick or did they just decide not to try.
Liggins could have been a deal for a team trying to clear capspace. Powell and Matthews are on terrible contracts but they need to be dealed anyway if the team wants to continue to get younger. I don`t think a better moment to trade both will come unless a team is desperate for a 3&D wing or a backup big at the trade deadline.

If it makes you feel any better, we are signing Motley. He is more talented and was projected higher than a lot of those guys that we would have had to pay to pick in the draft anyway

You're assuming that teams were willing to give up those picks. All reports were that they did try to trade back into the late 1st and into the 2nd but were not able to get a deal done. Because this was a deep draft teams were not willing to just give up picks, at least for anything the Mavs were offering.

^^Exactly. I don't think teams want to give us the picks. I wouldn't.

RC says he's probably a starter right now, whether that's @ the one or the two, we'll find out. Somebody (I can't find it now) reported they'd still like to get Holiday and then start those two together.

I've seen people say. Any links?

Also, I really don't understand the size concern? He's 6'2" or 6'3"? I think he'll be middle of the pack in terms of starting PG height. Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Rajon Rondo, Mike Conley, etc are all same size // smaller. To me, that can't be a huge issue.

I had Fraank Ntilikina higher on my board but I cannot deny that I'm glad it didn't work out that way. I think this could work out well for Dallas. Very excited to see him in action this summer.

It's crazy since he plays like Westbrook and West is 6'3".

People have also made a big deal about his wing span but he has the same wingspan as Chris Paul and Steph Curry. They seem to be doing just fine.

I think they tried, but I really wished we could have bought the pick that the Warriors bought from the Bulls and drafted Jordan Bell with. He seems like a nice prospect.

Did we not send out our allowance of cash in the Noel trade? How else would we have got a second in this draft? Should we have traded future seconds to draft a new 2nd round guy?

I would have liked a 2nd round pick for cash, if we still had the money to use.

We gave the cash away to Indiana for them taking on Jeremy Evans. We COULD have dipped into next year's cash, but why? We got DFS and Yogi undrafted without giving anything up. Also Barea and Marquis Daniels. Maybe Motley will have some success in the league.
