The addition of Harrison Barnes excites me.
I have many concerns but we now have a young talent and only time will tell how limited he'll be or how high he elevates his game.

Eh, I think barnes is what he is at this point.

His real value comes at PF as he can defend like a 4 and stretch the floor. The problem is that teams don't truly want a stretch 4 anymore you need a playmaking stretch 4.

A stretch 4 helps spacing. But teams started going to "switch on every pick" so at that point if you close out on the stretch 4 and he isn't capable of putting the ball on the floor he's not nearly as dangerous.

Barnes fills a useful role which is basically to open up the floor for guys who are efficient scorers. I think if you give him any bigger role you'll be disappointed. He can't run the PNR which is a major limiting factor.

If dirk could still rebound they'd make for an interesting pf/c combo but that ship sailed years ago for dirk

If he can put up consistent efforts and improve his defense and rebounding, he can contribute in a big way. He's more versatile than Aminu. He can surprise the whole league. He's being written off by all analytics right now. But he's consistently improved all 4 years before. Inexperienced players tend to be nervous in playoff. I am not too worry about him. I have seen him taking a lot of clutch 3 during the regular season. I don't have a problem with him.

This is a good read on Barnes, September 2015, after he rejected a $64 million deal, breaking down his game and looking ahead.

Barnes is like: "JACKPOOOOOT!!!"

But I like it, I'd rather pay him 95M than Parsons!

I almost did not recognize Donnie. Very happy for Barnes, great guy, hardworking and will do whatever is asked of him without complaining.

Damn, I have flashbacks from Parsons' signing

Make no mistake Barnes, that contract means you better show something good

On that note, wtf are Donnie and Finley smiling about? those guys realize their job is now glued to Barnes'
performance...?

I think it was a "we're not letting this one out of our sight" joke after what happened last time.

If Barnes can produce tiny slightly better than Parsons, then I am content.

This is the majority hope.

Being several years younger and not injury plagued is also a plus, hopefully team USA does him some good.

Harrison Barnes 'excited' for bigger role that comes with Mavs' max deal

“I’m excited about having a larger role,” Barnes told ESPN.com. “I’m more so excited about growing into that. It’s not one of those things where I’m expected to come out there every night and be the guy, but I’m going to be one of the major guys on the team.”

“I think it’s something that I just haven’t been in a lot of situations to do,” Barnes said of creating off the dribble as a scorer or facilitator. “It’s something that I need to grow in, and they’re working with me. It’ll be good.

“The biggest thing for me that I’m focusing on is just growing. I’ve been spending some time with Coach Carlisle and talking with some of the guys, and there’s just so much more that I have to do to learn and grow. I’m going to be put into situations that I haven’t been put in in my career yet. Just more decision-making, more scoring opportunities. There’s an adjustment period to that.”

“It’s such an honor and really just a blessing to receive a contract like that,” Barnes said. “I think it’s also a testament to the Mavericks organization, the confidence they have in me to invest that much money. Now my job is to go out there and perform, be a basketball player.”

That's what I'm hoping too. Is Coach K still coaching team USA? Being around other high level coaches can only do him good. He needs to work on his handles and the pick and roll from what I understand.

Same here. Did any of you guys check out his Twitter page the day his signing was announced? He had a ton of fans wishing him luck and he answered every single one. Took it as a really good sign and shows how appreciative he is.

I don't question Barnes' character or commitment, but I have my doubts about his ability to live up to the contract and money the Mavs gave him. We need him to be more than a catch and shoot 3&D wing, and I hope he can turn into that.

That's very cool actually.
Classy move to take the time to respond to everybody. Dallas is just waiting for someone to take over and to love once Dirk retires.

I think having Barnes at 4 will be a good initial start for him to learn play making. Most 4 couldn't stay in front of him. Nor could they guard him on perimeter tightly. If it is the case, we may see Dirk as a 5 often at the initial stage of the season.
