That is probably biggest cause for concern.

In Detroit, Billups became much better after Carlisle left.

That trade suggestion says volumes about where the Mavericks are as a team right now. :(

We are so dangerously close to slipping into mediocrity that it frightens me.

Get us Maggette and Marion, pick up the best backup big available for the mle, and try it again next year. That's a team with a good enough combination of athleticism and skills to make some noise. Or trade Dirk for youth and draft picks, hold a fire sale and start over. If we've blown our shot, admit it and let's start rebuilding.

I must admit that I don't know much about RC. Truth is, I think the psyche of this team is broken right now. Need to fix that first, which means fixing the roster, before anybody could turn this team back in the right direction.

I agree. I don't think Mark and Donnie would have hired him if he said he was going to run a slow half court offense.

I'm pretty sure we're already there. How else would you describe two first-round exits? And it's not like we're losing to championship teams, either. Inconsistency breeds mediocrity, and that's where we are now.

I was going to say yeah at first but then I saw their salaries and dear lord, Tin and Murphy's contracts stretch on FOREVER. Damp ends in 2 years and would be more valuable to us than those two.

Looks like it's semi-official:

Rick Carlisle will be the next head coach of the Mavericks, DallasBasketball.com has learned.

Of course, he's easily one of the top 5 best defensive coaches in the league, and probably top 3.

In Detroit, he had a great defensive team. But he was the offensive coach, his assistant Kevin O'neil ran all the D. O'neil later got a job coaching the Raps.

I wouldn't say he's known for D, but he's known to play a slow paced controlled game.

You should certainly allow your opponents fewer PPG next season.

Perhaps his best skill is reading how an opposing defense is playing, and calling plays that should get the team good looks. He is also very good at this out of time outs. I think in Detroit one year we had the highest FG% in the NBA after calling a timeout.

Now we just need to get some players in here that can play defense. He's 48 years old, start this thing over, build it on defense with a coach that knows how to play. Try and get Derick Rose, who would be perfect for a half-court team with his ability to penetrate against the defense and create for others.

Continuing to trade for bordorline all-stars doesnt make us any better and we will be dissapointed in a year from now. Sure Maggette improves us, but we still have major holes. Maggette doesnt create for others and turns it over as much as he gets assists, and IMO is inconsistent. Marion has a nack for not showing up in the playoffs. Kidd was a disapointement and even with a new team/system/players isnt the type of guy he use to be. Its time to rebuild.

Why?

If you guys clearly want to compete now, you guys will have to do some major overhauling. Adding an interior player, etc. And I assume you won't be dealing Jason Kidd, and that negates the acquisition of Rick Carlisle.

Carlisle is a micromanager, there's no way Kidd can work with that.

Trade for JO, sign Artest, get Derrick Rose. That shouldn't be too hard, yeah?

I think Kidd might be the PG he'll give full control over the offense, thus making it more of a run & gun offense.
I agree. I don't think Mark and Donnie would have hired him if he said he was going to run a slow half court offense.
Yeah, its better to run & gun and have fun as the GS Warriors and the Suns than the Spurs who are winning with their system.
:banghead:

BTW, isn't Cuban and coach Don Nelson in bad terms? Isn't it better to fire his son, Donnie? I thought it will be better for Cuban and the Mavs to hire a new GM especially after doing a bad trade in the Kidd deal.

The Spurs system fits their team. It doesn't fit Dallas. We need to open it up and run now that we have Kidd, but that shouldn't mean we sacrifice our defense like the warriors and suns.
