You have a PG who knows the system better than anyone except the coaches, still gets respect from opponents, and will likely only be used in "break-glass" emergencies. This is bad how?

What does he provide? You can't play him anymore when it matters, he has no upside long term and he takes away a roster spot from someone younger who could develop. It's a gratitude contract which is the decent thing to do but it sucks in terms of having the best possible team.

My bet is that last roster spot will go to signing Salah Mejiri, Ryan Broekhoff or bringing Courtney Lee back.

What a depressing prospect given the options.

In my humble opinion, there's an argument to be made that the very last guy coming off the bench is a well-liked veteran and the only player on the roster who wears a championship ring. He "provides" even when he's not playing and is loved by our current MVP candidate. On top of that, if he's running the second unit in an emergency, he knows exactly what he's doing and what Carlisle wants. I wouldn't call him useless at all. Frankly, I think I'd call him valuable.

He did not have a good year last year. But the year he tweaked his achilles was actually one of his best years. If someone has to sit at the end of the bench, let it be him rather than Justin Jackson.

The Mavs still have 2 open roster spots, or i am wrong? Can sign a guy for the rest of the MLE and Barea as the 15th guy.
Bey is 2 way so doesn’t count. We have 2 open spots.

The fascination of Rick/Dallas for small PG.

You can’t rule out what he provides to team chemistry (huge locker room presence) and well as coaching. He’s basically a player/coach. I think Cuban/Donnie/Carlisle also wants him to stay so that he can transition into a full time coaching role on the team. He’s likely the one that ends up taking over for Carlisle when he’s done.

What's preventing him from taking up that role in the locker room in a capacity that doesn't take up an active roster spot?

He still wants to play. Considering what he’s provided to this franchise he’s earned the right to play here as long as he wants and is able to.

As I said above, it's the decent thing to do but I also think it is holding the team back.

Is he really holding them back though? I mean you’re talking about an end of the bench role. A spot that over the course of this season might be held by a couple different guys that won’t even factor into the long term plans. Even though we all expect the team to be better this year they’re really still 1 more year away. If Cuban wants to give him the Dirk treatment I’m ok with it.

I think the Mavs are waiting for market on the center position to shake itself out. It's a terrible year for a free agent center. WCS probably didn't risk much with his low salary, but a lot of other centers are going to have smaller paychecks than they probably imagined.

Yeah, I think thats whats happening. Got their list of centers they would be willing to sign and have 2 year MLE deal with 2nd year team option at the ready. Just have to see who takes it first.
