Harrell has no reliable shot beyond 10 feet.
Agree with N. Powell. I have been on his bandwagon every season. He generally has a more reliable shot than THj and is perhaps more versatile on defense.

Somehow Norm Powell reminds me of what Wesley Matthews should have been pre-Achilles injury.
Just not sure how much it would cost to get Powell to Dallas. He has a player option that he is almost sure to exercise. Makes him UFA.

S&T THJ for Powell make sense for both teams.
Harrell is completely trash, he can play only in RS.

Projections on Powell is that Powell should get right at THj's salary numbers.

I wonder if the new Dallas coach and GM would be interested with Montrezl Harrell as the big athletic forward. Can play small ball C at times.
I agree but then we said the same thing about JRich last off-season after the trade.

He made mistakes, but also made plays on defense. Was a good rebounder and tracked down loose balls. Decent ball handler and showed some passing ability. He could guard PG, SG, and SF so would be good on switches.
So I would be reluctant to spend trade or cap assets on a position they may very well have a solution for in house.
This is part of the problem with RC not developing youth well.
We really don't have any idea what Green will be able to contribute.
If he would have gotten more PT last season I think we'd have a better idea of how to handle the THJ situation.
Powell would fill a double void if THJ signs elsewhere and JRich opts out which might not happen now with RC out of the picture.
I still think JRich could be salvaged if he opts in but if he does opt out it will create an enormous opportunity for Green.

I don't see any reason to keep Burke if Brunson stays. Just move Terry into Burke's role if there are no major issues with him and try to package Burke with someone to improve our frontcourt.
I also think Bey needs to get some opportunity next season.
Green, Terry and Bey with their low salaries could be beneficial to our cap situation going forward.
With very few draft picks over the next several years we may not have many other opportunities.

I doubt it makes sense for THJ to live part time in Canada. I don't see him agreeing to a S&T when money offers will be similar else where.41Dirk41 wrote:S&T THJ for Powell make sense for both teams.

I think Powell is in Portland.
Might be a good trade. Both can't defend well and THJ might be a better and streakier shooter but Norm is a more well rounded scorer that the team really needs.

Unfortunately I don't think Burke has any trade value. Fortunately his contract is small so hopefully can be filler going out in a bigger trade.
That was another crazy deal. Mavs had him for over a year and decided he wasn't worth signing again for any amount. Best he could find was a minimum deal with Philly. He was so bad, Philly cut him midway through the year. The Mavs bring him back to fill in WCS's roster spot for bubble and playoffs. He has several good games that month and the Mavs ignore what he did over the previous 2 years to give him a guaranteed 3 year deal. The Mavs brain trust somehow figured that instead of just having a little hot streak, Burke had miraculously turned a performance corner at 27 years old and in his 7th year in the NBA. I would really love to hear the internal discussion on needing to give him a 3 year guaranteed deal. Would be great comedy.

Thank you for correcting me. I lost track for a second. I believe Norman will decline his player option to pursue his options.agentofatlas wrote:HMFFL wrote:I doubt it makes sense for THJ to live part time in Canada. We should gauge Portland's interest for KP. A deal centered around KP for Norman Powell (s&t), Robert Covington, and future draft pick(s).

Make the call to New Orleans and see how many picks they'd give us to take on Eric Bledsoe and what's owed to him. pursue their lottery pick.

And more cap space for the new GM to fill out the roster with guys he wants.

Re: Mavs Offseason - 21/22 - what do we do from here?
My new #1 free agent target is Nic Batum... He is PJ Tucker 5 years ago... that dude is so valuable... he was able to guard both KP and Rudy Gobert from the 5 position... I think after seeing this Clippers run and what they do, the mavs should embrace the 5 out small ball approach... Even better if one of those guys could also be a high flyer vertical threat with Luka in a pick and roll.
Every one needs to be a 36%+ 3 point shooter, and needs to be able to guard 1-5... simple enough right. Too bad the entire league is hunting these same guys.
On the team right now, we have the following guys that fit the modern NBA mold...
Proven to fit mold of modern NBA:
Luka
DFS
Kleber (if he can get healthy and get his movement back)
Unproven, but look like the correct player profile (if these were Bob picks he could actually be on to something, also maybe why Rick didn't play them at all):
Josh Green (need to improve 3 point shot)
Tyler Bey (need to improve 3 point shot)
Nate Hinton (unproven, but has size and historically good rebounder... seems to fit the mold)
Flawed but possible:
Josh Richardson (honestly needs to add bulk and needs to drastically improve 3 point shot) <-- trade/let go...
Tyrell Terry (Needs to add 40 pounds of bulk and retain his athleticism and 3 point shot) <-- bulk him up
THJ - has to improve D... honestly let him go. too much money to be a one dimensional player <--- trade/let go
JJ Reddick -no D, , old...doesnt matter... he gone
KP (has to improve lateral footwork and D... almost put him in the category below but moved him up, because he is just different) <-- trade or try to feature him more in first half of the year... then trade
Wont work in modern NBA:
Boban <-- love ya, but bye
WCS <-- keep WCS on the 4M option though as a big defender if really needed
Powell <-- trade
Burke <-- trade if possible
Brunson <-- trade while you have value
Melli <-- bye
Looking at the roster this way, every move they make from here on out should be to only grab players that fit in the top two tiers on this list... You also need a coach willing to invest in guys in the unproven bucket with playing time.
Top Free agent targets (i.e. proven bucket):
Nic Batum - throw 12M a year for 3 years at him. ton of teams going to throw the MLE at him this year.
Danny Green - wouldnt mind a short term contract for vet leadership and teaching Josh Green how to be Danny Green
Norman Powell - i think he will be too expensive... his advanced stats aren't great... was this year fools gold? why would masai let him go...
Reggie Jackson - depends on cost, but interesting
Lonzo Ball - restricted, but I think I'd trust paying him over THJ...
Evan Fournier - probably not great value as he will be expensive
Otto Porter Jr - potential value/rebound play here...
Bobby Portis Jr - potential value, another potential small ball 5 type...
John Collins - no way ATL doesn't match
Interesting Free agent targets (unproven, but correct player profile)
Frank Ntilikina - i think this guy will get there... his shot is improving...
Bruce Brown - needs to improve his 3% but his advanced stats seem pretty good... cant cost too much i wouldn't think
Talen Horton-Tucker - if he figures out how to shoot... look out
Josh Hart - can he improve his shot? career corner 3% is 39.3%. seems like a solid defender...
Gary Trent JR - honestly nothing really jumps out about him. advanced stats are pretty poor.
Zach Collins - interesting smaller 5 type... could get value if he stays healthy finally
Justice Winslow - if team option is declined... interesting
Will Barton - ? he has had some good years, but health an issue now and he is inconsistent.
Top trade targets:
Marcus Smart
PJ Washington
... running out of steam, but feel free to add to this list...

Pretty good take for the most part imo.
A few things to add:
I think Mavs need to find some type of trade package that would include either DFS or Maxi to improve our SL.
Brunson and either DFS or Maxi should be enough to get someone to listen.
I like Ntilikina and always thought he'd be a decent fit with Luka but we'd be going down the same Delon/JRich path. I'd almost rather give Green a shot at that role if JRich opts out than use cap space on a guy like Ntilikina. Now if we could get Frank for the Vet Min then absolutely bring him in.
I see two glaring holes and vital needs for us to improve.
1. We need a solid starting caliber 4 that would pair well with KP. A better version of Maxi. A Draymond Green type.
2. A THJ/JRich wrapped into 1 player to add to the starting lineup.
Probably trade for one and sign FA for the other.

Watch how Cuban will give THJ 20m per year. Watching the one dimensional players in the playoffs getting exposed should be a warning already.

I wouldn’t be so sure with a new GM coming. That was the status quo for Donnie Nelson but not sure about the new GM.
