Way too many things can go wrong. You got to take the money if you are first round talent. When your NBA career is over then you can go back to college if you want to further your education.

Bold move but I didn't really want him very much anyway. Plenty of prospects just as tantalizing

There will never be another Dirk

You have a point there; but too, you have to remember there have been a lot of players come through the NBA with that same style and just couldn't make the cut. They will most certainly have to work hard to meet that potential.

I think you are absolutely right but the Mavs are in a slight predicament with Barnes and Noel at the 4/5. If Mavs draft Markkanen we're either keeping our top draft pick on the bench or putting a $20+mil player on the bench.
Markkanen makes a lot of sense for this team but only if Barnes moves to the 3 which likely won't happen.
I don't think it is outrageous to expect our pick to be a starter within 2 years and consider him a bust if he isn't.
Not sure Markkanen would ever crack the starting lineup and if he does it will probably be at the 5 which would be a nightmare in terms of defensive and rebounding with Barnes at the 4.

One of the intriguing things about drafting Markkanen would be having Dirk (and Holger) as a mentor to work with him at least the last year or two that Dirk is on the team (and hopefully after).
Lauri would definitely have to have the work ethic to become a great player and assert himself into a large role. You are correct that always doesn't happen and one of the main concerns I have about rebuilding through the draft.
