I didn't want to post this in the 1Q when the Mavs were crushing it. No bad juju.

But, I was watching Brunson every time he had the ball in the 1Q. The first 9.5 min of the game.

I know some folks here think Brunson played well vs MIA and think he plays great in general. I've been critical of him, so here's what I see. You guys tell me if you are seeing something different.

During that stretch, and this is unofficial, I counted Brunson physically passing the ball to teammates 18 times.

9 times were 25 feet or more away from the basket in the backcourt. Basically just handing the ball off to a teammate to start the offense. So basic, inconsequential plays.

2 times were passes off the dribble while he still had penetration lanes available & passes that were to a teammate in stride where he could attack the basket. Once to DFS for an open layup. Another to DFS streaking on the baseline & DFS missed a reverse layup.

2 times were passes where Brunson's dribble was still live, but his penetration had been cut off, & those were out to open 3 point shooters. One to DFS in the corner, he missed. One to Powell on the wing, in an awkward play were no other Mav was open. Didn't like that play. You don't like setting up Powell for a 3 pointer. You'd like to get a better shot than that.

2 times were inconsequential passes to teammates within the flow of the offense.

1 time was actually an assist. But it was nothing special. On the wing, defender causes Brunson to pick up his dribble. Jalen shovel pass to KP at the top of the key & KP knocks down a 25 foot contested 3 pointer.

1 time was with dribble still alive but penetration cut off by 2 defenders, a ill-advised pass to DFS cutting on the baseline with 2 defenders in his vicinity. MIL defender deflects the pass out of bounds. Could have easily been a TO

1 time was a pass to Powell in a bad spot on the wing because Brunson's penetration had been cut off & he picked up his dribble.

Also, twice I noticed Brunson bring the ball up the court & not pass at all. Once led to a foul & 2 free throws. The other led to a missed FG.

In the 2nd quarter, I stopped watching every Brunson possession & just started watching the game, but I noticed he did a few more of his pick up his dribble & pass or pass after penetration is cut off.

And what I mean by penetration cut off isn't that he draws in defenders & kicks to an open man. It's not like what I see from Luka. Luka attacks the defense, reads what they give him & then decides to either pass or shoot. What I see from Brunson is an attack mindset. I'm going to attack the basket & only stop and pass when I no longer think I can get my shot off. He's 100% drive & shoot first, and passing is his backup plan. Luka it's 50/50, see what the defense gives him.

Now, Brunson had 9 points in the 1H, 3/5 FGs 4 assts & only 1 TO in 14 minutes, so most people are going to look at that & say, "that's pretty good", and that's because those are good #s. Really good in fact. But, I don't see a skilled player. I see a player with one skill, a limited player, a player better suited for the ISO style ball of the early 2000s.

Every time I post this, someone says it's not the right time. Wondering why Boban isn't clogging up the lane for Giannis?

vs MIA & they're defensive rebounding issues, it wasn't the right time to play Boban. It isn't the right time to play Boban vs the Shaquille O'Neal of our era, Giannis....

So... When is the right time to play Boban?

Why is he on the roster?

So Giannis is going to drop 50 on us tonight... but, the question is will the Bucks break 100?

You know, before the season started, I was really high on Seth.
If I'm RC I'm reconsidering THJ in the starting lineup. I know THJ has size over Seth but Seth has been one of the most consistent 3-pt shooters in the league.
His playoff performance with the Blazers is a little concerning though but JET had some awful playoff performances too.

Yeah, I agree with all of your points. Also, Seth did have that one series vs his big brother where he had a few standout games vs GSW.

Damn. Bad possesion by Delon Wright there. Picked up his dribble, pivoted in the lane & forced a bad shot. Jalen Brunson vibes.

I just think Luka is so much better when he drives to the basket that it would be better to see Luka kick it out to Seth for a 3 rather than THJ. Luka twisting his ankle on a drive though ... worries me a little.
Hopefully Luka won't change his style of play much when he gets back - I just hate to see him settling for those long-ass 3's.

Kyle Korver is the one guy, not named Giannis Antetokounmpo, keeping the Bucks in this game.

I feel we're gonna miss Doncic's ability to draw fouls in the 4th Q again, just like vs Miami.

Agreed. Honestly, I want the Mavs to play it SUPER cautious with Luka. I have KD flashbacks to last year's Finals. Won't bother me at all if he doesn't come back til 1/2 vs BKN.

I think, Luka gets a bit worried when he drives & kicks or creates for teammates & they don't finish. When that happens several possesions over a 4-5 minute stretch, I think Luka tries to take over too much. Sometimes he gives you 15 points in a quarter and sometimes he takes a lot of deep 3s that Paul George would call bad shots. Lol

Keeping my eye on the Spurs-Rockets game and the Spurs were up by 20+ on the Rockets but the Rockets have stormed back to single digits. C'mon Pop do us a solid. :nonono:

That was outstanding help defense on Giannis by Delon Wright at the end of the 3Q

MIL is going to have to have some other than Giannis & Kyle Korver put the ball in the basket for them in order for that to matter.

HEY!!!!!!!

AWESOME!!!!

Thank you, Coach Carlisle. Putting Boban in for the 2nd Giannis FT attempt there at the end of the 3Q. Maybe he learned something from the end of OT vs MIA.

Awesome to see!!!

No lie. Giannis could score 16 in this quarter (probably will lol) and drop 50 on the Mavs.

Still puts MIL only at 92 points. Where are their other 8 points going to come from???

I'm not kidding.

The Mavs have played well enough to win this game. MIL has not. Let's hope the basketball Gods reward us!!!

Powell & Kleber with 4 fouls a piece. One of them will foul out I'm pretty sure of that. Will need big minutes from KP & somebody else like Justin Jackson to step up.... WHO knows... maybe even Boban?

Nice Maxi!!!

Kleber is getting better at contesting at the rim without fouling so much :)
