Almost 2 months later it still makes no sense as to why the Mavericks would do this. The potential conflict of interest re Nico's relationship with Rob Pelinka and Kobe Bryant is compelling enough considering how great the trade is for LA and how bad it is for DAL. And how it was done so quietly and so quickly. It all feels so dirty and that feeling is not going away.
Legitimate reason for the trade - No. Collusion - Yes.
But this is very hard to prove on the legal side.
I really want to believe there was a collusion, but it would be criminal, literally criminal, and ground for all sorts of fraud, racketeering and antitrust charges, Nico has built enough wealth and reputation not to risk legal adventure to help LAL/Nike.
It was said that Buss and Dumont knew about it the same time as Pelinka and Harrison. No proof here, but my guess is Buss gave financial favors (out of the NBA setting), let's say depositing $XXX,XXX,XXX to Dumont under the table (wouldn't put it past casino guys to do this) that would cover Mavs team payroll for X number of years. Having zero basketball knowledge and an eternal love for money, fat man had to say yes.
My tin foil hat theory suggests that Buss had to spend for a superstar to keep the team relevant. The Busses have no other businesses. This is their main source of income. The Lakers have to work for them to earn. The Mavs are a side gig for the Adelsons. And Dumont seems to love money. By doing that deal, Dumont gets to have free payroll for X number of years at the cost of 1 guy, and in his mind he could sell that idea to the fans and still have the team earn money simultaneously. Adelson and Dumont are financially motivated. They bought the team to earn more money, and not because of fandom.
On the Lakers side, Buss has to make back whatever she bought Doncic for. And they have X number of years to do so. Harrison and Pelinka are employees taking the bullet for the actual culprits pulling the strings - the owners. I've flipped this scenario a lot of times on my mind. And at the end of the day, it can be because of money. And simply put, Doncic was sold, not to the highest bidder, but to a client who knows how to keep her mouth shut and can pay the bill.
