Just filed to ESPN.com: Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks have reached terms on a new four-year contract

Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks have agreed to a four-year contract.

Nowitzki will be guaranteed $80 million over the length of the contract and accepted less money in order to give the Mavericks more room to make additional moves.

RealGM Note: Nowitzki has spent his entire career with Dallas since coming into the NBA in 1998 and was seen as the least likely player to leave his incumbent team.

I can't believe he really didn't take the max deal. I don't really understand how that helps Cuban, we're still way over the cap.

Dirk, Mavs agree to deal

The Dallas Mavericks got the answer they were hoping for Saturday night: Dirk Nowitzki has pledged to re-sign with the only team he's ever played for.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that Nowitzki and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban have reached terms on a new four-year contract after a series of wrap-up meetings that consumed much of the day.

The deal, sources said, is worth at least $80 million and includes a no-trade clause, with Nowitzki making good on a longstanding offer to Cuban to take less than the maximum $96.2 million he could have received over the next four seasons in exchange for assurances that the Mavericks will use that financial flexibility to ramp up their efforts to acquire a top-tier sidekick.

I believe Kobe is the only other player with a no trade clause.

I cant see Dirk playing for another team.

I know he did take less the max but Dallas are so over the cap that i does litle to help them get better players.

This is why I love Dirk, he does something like this while Wade and Lebron are screwing with their fans because 'it feels good to be wanted'.

What stings is the money he just gifted to us is probably going to be spent keeping Haywood.

Just very good news.

Now, I hope we find a way to put a team around him that gives him a true shot at bringing a championship to Dallas without having to count on Kobe breaking his leg.

Either way, I couldn't be happier at the possibility that Dirk plays his entire career in a Dallas Mavericks uniform. Talk about his shortcomings all you want (I have from time to time), but he's a unique and great player that we've been fortunate to watch for all these years. He's a throwback ... a superstar who's first and foremost a basketball player, a gym rat who constantly works on his game. Not a great athlete, but a great player. He isn't a part of Team Mobile, he isn't on anybody's top 5 phone list, he doesn't walk down a runway with a breeze blowing through his hair. Doesn't sell hair tonic. He's just a nightmare on the court.

I can't think of anybody in his generation of players that deserves to play out his career in a single jersey more than Dirk.

Way to go, Dirk, and way to go, Mavs.

I cringe a little for Dirk considering he may very well have just committed to never getting a ring. I hope that everyone remembers this sacrifice when he starts showing his years and everyone wants to bitch about the money owed to him.

Money wouldn't be an issue in getting Lebron or Wade but it apparently is in getting Haywood. Reportedly the Mavs want to sing Haywood for 8 mill a year and Haywood wants at least 10 a year. Now you can go ahead and pay him that extra 2 mill a year cuz of the 16 million you are saving from Dirk.

You really gotta give it upto the guy. He said a year or two ago he would take less money and he has said in the past that he wants to win here. That he does not want to chase the ring , that it would cheapen it for him to win it elsewhere. You look and see what all of these divas are doing in free agency right now and Dirk once again proves that in class, humility, unselfishness, he is in a class of his own.

It should give Cuban more incentive and flexibility to take on a bad contract packaged with a good player to upgrade the team. Maybe taking on someone like Brand in order to acquire Iggy or net another star player in a multi-team deal.

Dirk did his part now its up to Donnie and Mark to do theirs.

Of course it does. That $16 mil he saved Cuban goes a long way in paying Matt Carroll and Eduardo Najera.

Portland fan here. I just wanted to say you guys are very lucky having a guy like Dirk on your team. Not only has he been loyal, but he actually took less money than he could have gotten. A LOT of players say it isn't about the money but isn't it funny how they always sign the biggest contract offered to them. Dirk is a class guy.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS that get's me out of my no-post-period great stuff... couldn't have imagined seeing him in another jersey. That basically ensures now that he will finish his career as a Mav. I love it even though I still think we need major reinforcements in order to compete for a title. But maybe it's going to be easier now to lure the other major free-agents (e.g. Wade) with Dirk committed to the team / project Cuban.

Huge sigh of relief... Even the idea of Dirk playing for another team seemed wrong. Glad he will be back, and im sure the 16 million we are saving will help in his quest to finish what he started here.

And that my friends is why even though lbj or wade is the better athlete, dirk is still the better human being.

With Dirk back as a Mav it is now time to find a way to use the DUST chip and ship out Jet in the process. That would make for a wonderful offseason.

That is the part I like. Cuban and Donnie should now do whatever it takes to vastly improve the quality of our starting lineup.
CP3 and/or Melo should be targets.

I just don't see how Dirk taking less money helps Dallas. Dallas is going to be over the cap anyway. Dirk is going to be super pissed when his sidekick that he gave up 16 million over ends up to be a Mike Miller or ancient Shaq.

For Deng or someone like Ellis but I doubt he's on the table for what Dallas has to offer.
