Podcast with James Donaldson, Talks About 80s Mavs

Post#1 » by LamarMatic7 » Sat Aug 20, 2016 1:33 pm

So I had James Donaldson on my podcast and obviously he's a part of your 1987-88 Dallas Mavericks team that lost in seven to the Lakers in the conference finals. We spent a decent part of the podcast talking about that team and how it all fell apart. I felt that some of you might be interested in this and I hope you guys are alright with me coming here and doing some self-promotion. If it's against the rules of your specific section, then I apologize and I won't do so again.

To hear a snippet of it, here's James talking about being selected for the 1988 All-Star game and not really feeling deserving of the honor:

The Mavs talk starts at about 35:20.

Link for the whole episode:
https://lamarmatic.com/2016/08/20/the-handle-podcast-james-donaldson-082016/

Or if you prefer going straight to iTunes, here's the link for the podcast itself on which I interview retired basketball players:

I hope that someone will find this interesting or, perhaps, will send it to a Mavs history junkie friend of his.

Cheers!

This is fine mate and I appreciate you sharing this with us. James Donaldson was a good dude and he's still the 2nd best center we've ever had.

Became famous for defending Duncan

Good work with the website. I bookmarked it a long time ago when you posted something here before.

Thanks! I'll certainly try to keep this up and release more podcasts with former players.

Just had another former Mav on. Not as much Mavericks talk, to be honest, but, perhaps, some of you are interested in learning more about the one and only Uwe Blab:

Donaldson is the best Mavericks center ever. I would take his 6 3/4 seasons, 1 all star season, and 4 playoff appearances in Dallas over Tyson Chandler's two seasons. He averaged 8.8 points and 9.5 rebounds in Dallas. That is slightly worse than Tyson Chandler, but Donaldson did it for almost 7 years.

I definitely agree with that. Chandler might have been somewhat better but I'll always go with the guy that has the longevity when it's a conversation about a franchise's best players or some sort of all-time squad.

Mavs where actually really good in the 80's.I didn't get the see them. The coastal biased mainstream media ignores that. They just bring up the 90's and pass right over that.
Convert municipal and agricultural waste to refined natural gas. Sell the refined natural gas to gas companies. Use the money to provide a monthly basic income to people that earn less than $28,000 a year.

They took the Lakers to Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals in 1988. That team was amazing but came up just short. Too bad the team imploded. Tarpley had drug problems, Aguirre had attitude problems, and their acquisitions bombed - English, Lever, and Dantley.

What's up, guys? I'm back with some more random stuff. Probably not worthy of a separate thread so I'll just leave it here.

Butch Beard was on and we talked about his whole life and career. His stint as an assistant coach for the late 90s Mavs is just a footnote in it. Yet I had to ask about the 96-97 season during which you guys fielded 27 players.

And then there's of course the Toni Braxton thing. Butch just flat out said that it was true, that it did break the team up:

Mavs talk starts at 57:05:

Not to mention passing on Karl Malone.

There were so many things wrong with the Mavs during the early to mid-90's. As a team and as an organization. The Toni Braxton thing was just another thing that help tear that team apart. Kidd's immaturity, Jackson and Madhburn's injuries, poor coaching, and a cheap owner were all contributors to tearing that team apart.
