What's this about KP saying he's going to play on the QO next year? That feels really bad. Someone explain all this to me. Stuck on conference calls at work and have no info....

I'm speechless. So great.

What a year to be a Mavs fan.

Do the Mavs have any projected cap space after this move?

I THINK ( not 100% sure ) that he will basically be unrestricted free agent after. So he can sign anywhere. But it could also mean that they did this so that he can sign for max with the Mavs if he really wanted to come here. Otherwise Mavs shot themselves in the foot. But like i said, my way of thinking could be wrong.

Barnes is about to expire and players like JJ and Harris are on small contacts. Maxi is also set to expire.

My guess is they now hope Barnes and Powell opt in and they operate as an over the cap team. They can't get enough cap space to be worth clearing the books for at this point.

Mavs will still have some cap space.

1. Barnes 25.1
2. Powell 10.2
3. Luka 7.7
4. Brunson 1.4
5. Broekhoff 1.4
6. Spalding 1.4
7. Hardaway 18.1
8. Lee 12.8
9. KP (qualifying offer) 4.5
10 - 12 Cap holds 3
Total = 85.6
Cap = 109
Cap Space = 23.4 million or 47.5 million if Barnes opts out.

That it had been too long since Mills did something to remind people that we were the worst franchise in NA sports...

So what do I need to know as a newly part-time Mavs fan? Luka & KP will be a delight, and being the third wheel/6th man should help keep THJ from doing anything too stupid. Lee hasn’t played much this year, but he’s not washed yet, if that helps. I dunno did the Mavs need swingmen? I know I already like Finney-Smith.

Him being an unrestricted free agent in a yeah scares me but it’s a necessary risk. He’s a top 15 player in the league when healthy and he should seemingly be happy here with Luka, Dirk, Maxi, and a large market. Here’s to hoping :)

I saw a report that he plans to sign the QO. What does that mean in terms of his earning potential? I would assume the Mavs were planning to offer him the max, so not sure why he would take this route. There are two potential reasons:

1. He is unsure how much he will like Dallas and wants to control his own destiny. He was already with the NYK, so I don't think the whole big city thing should be an issue for him. Not sure how teams will be looking roster wise in 2020, but most teams will likely spend most of their money in 2019, with the remaining teams likely not particularly desirable.

2. Assuming that whether he signs a max contract with the Mavs this year or next year, it doesn't change his particular earning potential, this would still give us alot of cap space to work with in the summer of 2019, and possible 2020 since his cap number would be very low and we could legitimately build a team before he signs the max and locks us in.

Again, not sure how this effects him, if he signs the QO, but I'm hoping its the second.

He was concerned about their losing culture, so they shipped him out quickly. :lol:

KP’s caphold is a smidge over 17M and he’ll require a max deal. So FA doesn’t look like a viable option unless Barnes opts out, but maybe the Mavs can recoup some assets by using Lee to trade for a longer contract, like Dieng’s?

I'm ... reluctantly optimistic about this.
KP is still recovering and knee/foot issues are bad for big guys so I really hope the Mavs training staff got a good look at his medicals before this trade.

I've always considered KP to be largely overrated but he's still a pretty good player.
I want to see when this 1st rounder is and what protection it has.
It is annoying that the Mavs now own two first round picks so now we have to rely on Luka and Porzingis developing in order for this team to get better. I have high hopes for these two.

I think it means he can get a 5th year from Dallas in free agency... I think. Maybe I’m wrong

I think they should try to move Barnes + Powell to SAC for expirings. Helps the tank to secure their 2019 R1 and gives them the space to sign Randle, who they are linked to and fits amazingly between Luka/Zinger and some 3/D role players. Could be the quickest rebuild in NBA history.

I like the trade, even though Porzingis injuries are a risk.
That Shams report about him wanting to take the QO though, that worries me. Have anyone confirmed that?
