Mavs pick up option on Ryan Broekhoff

This doesn't necessarily mean the Mavs will bring back Broekhoff next season. It's possible they needed some fillers to balance out salaries in an upcoming trade. In that scenario, they would've needed to guarantee Broekhoff's salary just so they can include his contract in the trade.

However, this definitely means the Mavs are not even going to try chasing Durant. They could've had enough cap space to offer Durant his max if they stretch waive Courtney Lee. But with Broekhoff's salary on the books, that's no longer possible.

I wasn't counting on KD to come here anyway.

I was hoping they didn't guarantee his salary, saved some extra space, and then brought him back on the minimum.

But you're right, maybe they do have a trade in mind.

Shutdown all KP, Luka, Brunson, TH from the start. Broekhoff and Justin will bring the Mavs the best chance to win the lottery in 2020. There's no worser defensive duo at 2/3 in this league. I'm a little surprise that the Mavs make up the mind so quickly after missing out on big fish. Unless there's Leonard coming, sign some young piece to make the last run at deep lottery talents is the right choice. When will the Mavs start Broekhoff in place of Luka? What's next? Re-sign Dirk as starting 4?

Dirk-Kosta-Roby-Broekhoff-Justin lineup will get the Mavs the best draft prospect next offseason. Without Dirk, then Hezonja at PG and Kosta at C. That's the best lineup for tanking. New comer, such as Reaves and potentially Diallo will get significant playing time as well. So the Mavs shutdown KP, Luka, Powell, Brunson and perhaps TH from the start of the season. Without defense, playmaking with poor spacing. This lineup is bound for a deep lottery run. Tanking for wiseman is no a shame at all. This kid is high motor big with great agility with 7-1 tall and 7-6 wingspan and 9-6 vertical leap to offer. Wiseman with KP is simply unguardable. No elite big defender can stop either. With small cap holds and a lot of expiring contracts off the book, the Mavs could be major buyer as well assume most teams get fat contract for mediocre players this offseason. Targetting Diallo and Hezonja for small cap hold makes sense.

Could you be more dramatic...? There is no way mavs would get better value than Broekhoff with the 500k saving they would have made. He’s an elite shooter, decent slasher, and really good character guy on a bargain contract. And Jackson has only played two years? If he was the exact played he is now, but in college, people would lose their **** about upside and who they can throw off the ship for draft picks, then their attention span lasts 5mins and they’re looking for someone else. It’s almost impossible to really compete for a ring if you don’t develop some decent talent from within your own team. Look what Siakam did in year 3.

Broekhoff is on a minimum contract. He's definitely worth that, even if he ends up playing only 30 games next season, the cap hit is literally minimal. Also, where do you get the idea that Hezonja is a PG? He's a boneheaded SF, could potentially see him play sg or pf, never pg.

As far down in the rotation Broekhoff is , he is a non factor. He may play 20-30 games around 10 minutes a game max. He does what a minimum guy does. Good move by Dallas to fill that 13 or 14th man spot.

Wouldn't surprise me if Broek develops into a bigger role this season.
He is currently by far our shooter and his D isn't that bad. The guy has some hops and is much more athletic than I originally thought and he seems to play pretty smart.
Not saying he'll become a star but he is a Carlisle type of player that should get more PT this season if we don't load up on players that play his position or have similar skills.
