Personally, I'd prefer Trey Burke and his intact achilles tendon for the vet minimum as our 3rd string PG, but it's hard to overlook what Barea means to the team. So I guess that's okay for a one year minimum.

With the absence of Dirk this season it would be wise to sign Barea or Harris for some veteran leadership.
Rick will need some maturity in the locker room to help maintain control and keep the young players in line and stay focused on playing within the system.

JJ Barea deserves one more season. He probably wants to finish out the season without being injured and call it a career.

I’d prefer Trey Burke also. Put JJ Barea in a coaching role until he is back in game shape. Oh well, it’s not my team or my money or valuable roster spots

I wonder what role Barea plays. 3-string PG? Combo guard alongside Brunson? Then, what about Hardaway? SG? SF? Starter? Bench player?

I don't see how he will play any significant minutes next year with the Achilles injury. It was pretty recent and by all accounts it takes at least a year to recover. We won't see Barea until sometime next year. Given how speed was always a huge part of JJ's game and how a Achilles injury robs a player of their explosion I have a hard time seeing how he could be effective.

Oh well, if the next season is basically the Mavs giving JJ one last payday I'm OK with that.
