538's Draymond Stat: Advanced Shooting Defense Metric

Post#1 » by turcorox911 » Wed Jul 10, 2019 6:14 pm

So 538 came up with a new advanced shooting defense metric that they named DRAYMOND, in honor of the Dray, who is usually seen as the league's premier shot defense guy. It comes down to defending shots and minimizing openeness, so it doesn't necessarily look at defensive plays made in transition, on the other end of the court, or even plays like intercepting a pass, boxing out, or poking at a loose ball.

This is all shooting related. And if you would like to read more about it, then please view the article below.

I just wanted to ask if you all think we might be underselling KP's defensive ability, as it looks like he's an elite shot defender. Also, does this stat change your mind about a guy like Oubre?

KPs defensive ability is massively undersold.

BUT, he's a rim protector. He simply has to play the 5.

If you ask him to chase stretch 4s he's going to put his body under more stress than the 5, wear himself out and frankly get repeatedly blown by.

With our current line up, KP at the 5 blocking shots and Maxi hounding the 4 and playing smart weak side defense will be fantastic. Throw in Delon Wright and DFS and we may just have a top 10 defense.

Good to see Kleber up high and both DFS and Powell on the right side of things too.
