Mavericks make roster-clearing move by trading Isaiah Roby for Thunder’s Justin Patton, who will be waived

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Jan 24, 2020 10:35 pm

Patton was the 16th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft.

The team has traded Isaiah Roby, the 45th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft, to the Oklahoma City Thunder for 6-11 center Justin Patton, the 16th overall pick in the 2017 draft. The trade was first reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Starting to look like the Mavs are going to bring in an unsigned free agent.
Sorry to see Roby go even though he didn't play for the Mavs ... much.

I hate to see young players not really get a chance to show what they can do. Maybe he might get playing time in OKC.

Isiah Roby was drafted to be a Dwight Powell starter kit. He must be really, really bad if they're dumping him right after Dwight Powell tore his Achilles. If Roby was in any way decent, Powell's injury would've been seen as an opportunity for him.

On the bright side: Roby has a multi-year contract, and so trading him is much better than waiving him. The Mavs were forced to waive Ray Spalding last year and it created dead money for 3 years.

Not necessarily. They would need to clear a roster spot if they're planning to use their TPE.

I hope the Thunder can tap into Roby's potential, but we'll see about that.
I do like that the Mavs got WCS though.

Wonder who they will bring in? I am guessing some type of tall 3 and D wing dude 6,8?

Any chance this guy becomes a rotation player? Strengths and weaknesses?

Athletic and a decent shooter, but no don’t expect him to really be anything more than a G league guy unfortunately

Most I ever saw of the guy was clips of him running open gym pick up game with Luka, Wes Matthews, DFS, and a handful of other pro players at what looked like Prestonwood Baptist church in Plano this summer.

Looked like he had a decent jump shot, while not having the appearance of an elite athlete, I think he's projectable to put on some strength & size to his frame.

He'll probably never amount to anything in the NBA as most 2nd rounders never do, but he has some gifts. It's all about how hard he works to put it together & what opportunities the Thunder give him. He wasn't going to get those opportunities in Dallas. Multi-year vets can barely get off the bench in Dallas.

Well the thunder bring guys from the g league to the starting lineup as we are seeing with Lu Dort so I’m sure Roby will get a chance.

So, I don't understand why we did this trade. I am missing something.

We traded a guy with 2 years, $3 mil guaranteed for a guy with 3 years, $5.35 mil just to waive him? And we added cash to that deal?

Isaiah Roby
$1,500,000
$1,517,981
$1,782,621* (unguaranteed)
$1,930,681 (team option)

Isaiah Roby's 2021/22 contract becomes guaranteed if not waived by July 3, 2021, HoopsHype has learned. His 2022/23 contract becomes guaranteed if not waived by July 3, 2022.

Justin Patton
$1,620,564
$1,762,796
$1,970,860

According to that DMN link, which sites spotrac.com, Patron's last two years are not guaranteed. Hoopshype does not say that in the notes nor by color code. If DMN is right, I see how this makes sense.

Return to Dallas Mavericks
