I think the major issue is that Maxi is more a 5 than a 4. Maxi does guard centers a whole lot better than power forward. The same is true about J-Rich. J-Rich is not a bad defender but is awfully bad guarding random PGs.

Well there goes a guy who actually wanted to come here.
There aren't many options left for us to improve this season.

When you see the compensation for Markkanen in addition to what he got paid, I’m perfectly fine with him going to Cleveland and not here in Dallas.

Thank God we didn't pick up this stiff. Cleveland gets the stiff instead.

A stiff who can score. Mavs have many who cannot.

Rather we keep a better defesive team with our almost league leading 3 point shootinng situation we are going to have plenty of offense we need some better D. As far as offseason additions go, Moses should come in and help with that as should our new rookie and the 2 wings. Then we always can count on the greatness of Boban so KP has a decent cast to take pressure off him when he needs to start next to either Boban or Brown so we can score from both the inside out game or use outside in with a big that is near the rim waiting to get the easy rebound and putback by being taller and large enough to gain position.

Kleber can do better against second stringers and so we have a nice bench with he and whoever is there next to him. WCS can be the bench guy so Boban is kept fresh for the play offs. Of course if KP regains his game we have to pray he does not get hurt again so there is that constant worry driving us to develop guys more and so even Onu may get some burn if he earns it in Frisco where he needsto play for a year or so to develop his game so he can prepare more to play against NBA big men instead of feasting on lower level leagues.

Seems to me DFS and Luka are also big enough to play the 4 so we have plenty of ways to match up against teams and give them differet looks.

A stiff who could be easily our second/third best player.

Good year with Powell or Kleber starters.

We have seen that for trading for someone, you have to have something. Staying with "defenders" like Kleber means that you will never have something that other teams want. Markkanen needs just 1 good season to be 3x more valuable than Kleber. The only hope I see for Mavs is that KP somehow returns to his old form, remain healthy and Mavs trade him for someone good. 3 big ifs.

This better defensive team was destroyed in playoffs. A little better offense would have won the serie though.
Kleber was disastrous in both playoffs series and people still believe in him. Who cares if he can shoot 40% for 3, if he can make only 1 per game, when it matters.
You're not winning anything with players like Kleber, Powell, WCS, DFS, Boban...but it looks they will retire here.

You're not winning with them as important starters you mean? Majority of them could play a role on a championship team, maybe even as starters, if other players in the starting lineup were stars. They can't be your 4th or 5th most important player though.

Dallas are generally carrying themselves as contenders, fiddling with the end of rotation pieces and specialists, when they should still be in the talent acquisition part of the build. Get your core together first, Bullocks, DFSs and Maxis come later and are not that hard to come by when your a bonafide contender.

I guess they're capped out now, but they should've been more aggressive when they still had capsapace and take low value bad contracts and picks and prospects that come with it. They wouldn't have been any worse than they were over the last two seasons imo, but at least they'd now have some assets to trade for someone impactful.

This team is stuck being middle of the pack playoff team for the foreseeable future now without any real avenues to improve. I mean we're all hoping KP gets the bounce in his knees back, but I'm not sure wishing for it's gonna get it done. The rest of the team is what it is, don't really see major potential for improvement...

Finnish NBA broadcaster said that Dallas never offered Kleber (said this in other tweet). Offer was Dwight Powell + 1st + 2x 2nds. Bulls declined.

This makes me wonder what other trades they were denied this off season. We know of at least two potential trades they got denied on (Markkanen and Dragic). Who else have they been in the mix for and got turned down?

Well.. Finland is small country. Lauri is like politician in Finalnd. He gives interviews to just few peeps. Palotie is one of them. Lauri has been in his podcast few times. Journalist who leaked "Lauri want out of Bulls" is second as he is former basketball player also.

Seeing the price they paid for Lauri and what the Bulls got back in return, I'm kinda glad the Mavs didn't pull the trigger. I was hoping the Mavs could get him for the TPE and 2nd round picks or a prospect, but even then, Lauri wouldn't have moved the needle too much. He would have come off the bench and played the Bobby Portis role for this team. That's an important role, but it's not worth giving up a first round pick for. A lot of 6MOY only cost 2nd round picks or something like that. Clarkson was a 2nd round pick himself and the Jazz got him for a bust and two 2nds. Ingles was undrafted, Brunson was a 2nd round pick, and THJ was a throw-in to the KP trade. Lou Williams himself was a 2nd round pick, and DRose was signed as a FA. Not too often will you see a team give up a first round pick for a 6th man, so I'm glad that Mavs didn't.

Also, the Mavs will probably need those first round picks, prospects, cash, and swaps so they can take a swing at bigger players on the trade market. I'm sure they want to go after Beal now that the Wizards traded away Westbrook.

100%

I’m glad they didn’t make this trade (for that price). When the trade deadline is here and if they had already traded their draft capital for Markkanen there would be a lot of angry Mavs fans. Can you imagine, Dame wants to come to Dallas but they already traded their picks for Markkanen.
