League Shooting Numbers Down - Are The Mavs Different?

Post#1 » by HairyGOATee » Mon Jan 10, 2022 6:43 pm

I thought I'd go with a more general approach here. League shooting numbers are down this year, and so are the Mavs'. But are the Mavs' struggles unique, or do the same general arguments that apply to most other teams also apply to this Mavs squad?

Lemme know what you think.

Our problem has been Hardaway and Bullock. They have pretty much rendered themself useless with their bad shooting. The good thing is that it can't become any worse than that.

KP's 3P shooting has been worse than both though tbh. Getting Luka back helps with shooting because he can get the dribble penetration that allows other players to spot up for a catch & shoot, which are higher percentage shots, but still, shooting numbers are down league wide.

I'm not sure the struggles are more unique to the Mavs than the rest of the league. If they are, then a big culprit is the change from Carlisle's historically efficient offense to whatever the heck Kidd calls his offense.

But again, teams around the league are struggling to hit shots like they did last season and the season before. It's not just the Mavs.

Yes, but he has been scoring from other places, shooting 54% on 2 pointers while "only" 35% of his shots have been 3 pointers. Bullock and Hardaway's shoots are more 3 pointers than 2 pointers and they are not making them.

Fair enough.

Do you think the team's struggles are unique to them, or is it just something that's going on across the league this year?

If you look at the average field goal percentage for the league you will see it is down, but it is not a huge difference considering how much it changes one way or the other each season. You also have to consider a ton of players have been on 10 days contract and they are not shooting well. They also let defenders play more defense this season, so that could so affect the play. Free throws are the way to measure if players are shooting badly leaguewide and it is more or less the same. If the ball affected the shooting it should have affected free throws too.

Thanks for the question :)

Shooting is down leaguewide. Mavs dropped from 18th 1 year ago to 24th this year in 3pt pct. And they were lower still a couple of games ago. So Mavs are (were? hopefully they're out of it now) in a shooting slump of their own...

Josh Richardson is having his best shooting season of his career. He is over 40% from three. :banghead:

But I thought Luka is a supreme point guard who can make players better?

Something seems off in Dallas from the 3 point line. Maybe Kidd is working so hard on defense in practice that they are taking too few shooting repetitions in practice. THJ, KP, and Bullock are not good this year from behind three. Luka's passing seems to be good when I watch the game. Shooting is down this year as the league is allowing teams to defend the three again and players get less practice because of the pandemic. It just seems like the Mavs shooting has taken a bigger turn for the worse than everyone else.

Maybe Bob Voulgaris needs to come back and tell the Mavericks where to let each player stand behind the three point line to be the most efficient.

He is, but the Mavs let Josh Richardson chuck off the dribble a lot. They should have had him shoot as a spot-up or catch-and-shoot guy more. Too often I'd see Josh fling it from deep and/or off the dribble. That didn't sit well with me.

Well, free throws are one thing, but there can be variability there as well, and we can't look solely at FTs. But that's a good starting point. Catch and shoot 3s or wide open 3s can help too. Well, wide open shots in general.

But the other points you made are more than valid, and honestly, the Mavs switched from Carlisle to Kidd, so that affects things a lot too.
