RS 22/23 - Mavs vs Kings (Wed, 8:30PM EST)

Post#1 » by Dirk » Mon Apr 3, 2023 11:19 am

This will be a back to back game for the Kings.

What a tense end of a season. And for all the wrong reasons.
Image

Tuesday:
#2 seed battle
Trail Blazers at Grizzlies
Kings at Pelicans

#Play-in battle
Thunder at Warriors
Timberwolves at Nets

Feels like a strong chance that the Kings just rest players. Grizzlies beat the Blazers and Kings lose in NO and the #2 seed is settled.

No defense vs. No defense

Mavs should be able to score 130 pts easily

But giving up 160 in the process.

Well someone will have to play at least a little bit of defense, unless they just wait for clock to run out lol.

Who here tracks the scenarios? Does it make sense for the mavs to win this game? Which scenario reaps more benefits?

No, Mavs are out of play in, not mathematically, but practically, and any win from now on, jeopardizes the pick going to NYK.

You dont think they make the play in if they win all the games left?

No, and it's way too much risk to operate hoping they do, OKC wins 2 games and Mavs are 11th or 12th (Mavs need to beat the Bulls who will drop), take the 10th pick and count your losses, there is no gain in making the play in.
If Mavs do make the play in, they'll need to beat the Wolves on the road, not happening, Wolves own the Mavs in Minny.

Mavs need to start Lawson at C to keep this one in the bag. Send Luka and Kyrie to Cancun over the weekend.

Said it yesterday that was a brutal loss for the Kings to the Spurs. Could have been 1 back and still chasing the 2 seed. Now thats basically gone. Really fear the Mavs are backing into the 10 spot unless they sit players.

To build a better team the goal is to go for the tank .

We need bigs and that is way to costly to find in free agency but a rookie in the top 10 picks should be a good fit there are a few decent 6'9" SF/PF types and with a trade we could add in a 2nd round pick to draft a center in the second like Zach Edey a 7'4" 300 pounder that has enough skill to score 25 ppg under the tankathons per 36 minute scale which is more than Wembyana scored on that rating basis. He was Purdues top player last season.

Europeans don't know how to tank :D I remember Dirk saying he didn't want to have any part in tanking either. Plus Luka is extremely competitive, he'll go to the end.

Unfortunately this is the NBA, so from FO perspective, retaining the pick and use it in a trade would be more benefitial. But in the process you alienate your top guy. What do you do? :-?

Words fail me.

These guys can't beat the Hornets. The Heat. The Hawks. All bad to mediocre teams. But they act like they're "competitive", so they can't do the rational thing for the near term future of the team/franchise.

Luka, who apparently can't miss games now because of "being competitive", picked up a technical foul against the Hornets* that nearly knocked him out of the game against the Pacers (which we know they won... such a huge win!).

*Do you remember the Hornets game? They were humiliated at home. So what did they do on the road? They got thumped in the first half and Luka looked just about the worst he has looked --- then he decided to play and they made a comeback and ultimately lost anyway.

Kyrie also during some of these games was just a passenger and aphatetic (possibly because of his foot).

They sat Luka on back to backs during the season, but now "they're competitive".

I feel like while Luka is obviously super competitive (and probably the main reason he complains to the refs), being competitive must be a constant and a process... like it makes no sense that every year, we see the same patter "oh is he out of shape?". Or "he can't play off the ball". Being competitive is about working in the offseason, improving, maturing. It's not about playing games just because "they have a chance", all the while during an entire year they took games off or played horribly or he wasnt in his best shape or he didn't play up to his level.

So yeah, there's no upside to playing these guys.

The goal is to win championships. This team cannot win a championship. Shut them down. They're not idiots. If they get upset because they can't play against the Kings backups, the Bulls or the tanking Spurs... then so be it.

I wonder if we'll see a narrative of Luka is playing to secure the scoring title? So we are to assume he/Kyrie play as long as there's a chance of the play in?

Damn man, i have never seen you to be so passionate in the past 5 years. They really got to you :D

But this FO made some horrible decisions since the 2018 draft when they landed Brunson and Luka, it's honestly not even shocking to me anymore what they're doing. It's almost like one step forward and 3 steps back.

If Kyrie walks, this might actually be the best thing for this franchise. They'll get rid of ton of cap and will only have to deal with THJ/Brunson contracts. Then just start fresh and hope for the best.

Luka needs to get his ass in a better shape. He had MONSTER games and was nr1 MVP candidate, people suddenly forgot how hard he carried this team until he got injured, but he needs more stamina to be able to sustain all of that.

If Cuban can pull his head out of his ass, maybe they can find some great pieces and go from there. But if they resign Kyrie, this team will be soooo tight with money, we'll be watching Powell as a starting center for the next few years again.

Let’s lose this and get to the off-season as soon as possible.
